Dain
Dain is a one-handed Halfling labor organizer whose long preparation turns protest in Shubanel into an armed revolution and a new republic.
Biography
Preparing the revolution before it begins
Dain meets Sarcho as an injured factory worker living in extreme poverty, initially confronting the priest over a dead friend. Once she accepts Sarcho’s attempt at atonement, she helps transform public chanting into sustained action. Dain has already mapped gun stockpiles, recruited experienced workers, and prepared alternative plans; when suppression escalates, she divides protesters among police stations and depots. Though uncomfortable with command, her charisma and groundwork let a smaller revolutionary force defeat Collegoton’s regional army in Shubanel’s narrow old streets. (Chapters 203–208)
Victory makes Dain president and continuing commander, but it also creates pressure to extend the revolution before larger regional armies mobilize. She seeks contact with Rubeil and considers alliances that could invite divine conflict, while Sarcho’s secular argument points toward a less destructive route. Dain accepts the shift when the public embraces secularism and later explains that it prevented the planned consolidation. Her ambition remains, but she can revise strategy when another person’s moral insight produces a broader and safer coalition. (Chapters 209–215)
Appearance and personality
Dain is a small Halfling woman missing one hand after a factory injury. Unemployment and inadequate housing expose the class system she fights, while her surviving hand becomes a visible gesture when she addresses comrades. She is charismatic, prepared, forceful, and willing to use fire or weapons, but not lost in idealism; she recognizes logistical pressure and can abandon a favored plan when circumstances change. (Chapters 203–215)
Powers and abilities
Dain has no demonstrated magic or divine power. Her capabilities are organization, clandestine preparation, urban tactics, political pressure, and the personal charisma that makes workers follow an inexperienced commander. Lists of stockpiles and knowledge of Shubanel’s streets let her arm and position forces quickly, but she depends on former officers, mass participation, captured weapons, and Sarcho’s legitimacy. Her success is institutional and collective rather than a supernatural command effect. (Chapters 204–210)
