Xuanyi
Xuanyi is a Daoist Master of Jingyi Mountain whose repeated cooperation with Li Ximing grows from their first meeting during the northern conflict into a lasting exchange of knowledge and aid. His careful mediation and the Pure Corner Merit Bottle also connect him to Baiyin’s unusual fate and to later questions about Jingyi Mountain’s separation from the Southern Sea. Biography
The Pure Corner Merit Bottle and Baiyin
Xuanyi approached Ximing as they withdrew from the Merciful Ones, introducing himself as a Daoist Master of Jingyi Mountain. He had taken Baiyin, but Ximing recognized that Xuanyi’s arrival had prevented a much worse escape: without his intervention, Ximing expected to lose half his life in the retreat or be forced into a fight with the Buddhist cultivators. Xuanyi declined to remain for further combat because Chunyi Dao Gate was also active in Jiangbei and delaying risked being intercepted. (Chapter 1399)
As they divided the spoils, Xuanyi weakened the kasaya that held Baiyin and opened the old man’s storage pouch. He negotiated for Baiyin to visit Jingyi Mountain in exchange for spirit materials and dharma artifacts, then explained that the Pure Corner Merit Bottle—also called the Black Cloud Silver Sparrow Bottle—had been passed down by his master. Xuanyi said that carrying the bottle was fatal for someone whose fate was too weak; he had come to the mainland seeking a cultivator able to bear it, and Baiyin’s Foundation Establishment cultivation made him a candidate. (Chapter 1400) Baiyin agreed to go, beginning a relationship that Xuanyi later described as mutually beneficial. (Chapters 1399–1400)
Mediation around Hongxue Gate
Xuanyi later accompanied Tianwan to open the Hongxue Gate treasure. When Li Ximing and Li Zhouwei challenged the arrangement, he felt awkward about having come at Tianwan’s invitation and did not want to offend the Li family. He stepped in to mediate and accepted Ximing’s offer to conceal the disturbances above the hidden site, keeping the parties from turning the treasure dispute into a direct fight. (Chapter 1558)
In a later conversation, Li Zhouwei relayed Xuanyi’s view that the Hongxue site resembled a secret realm and that Wanlin Heaven’s instability might expose it. At the subsequent division of Hongxue spoils, Xuanyi again defended Li Quantao and helped mediate between him and Tianwan, keeping the dispute from becoming a direct fight. (Chapters 1560, 1592)
After the dispute settled, Xuanyi showed Ximing that Baiyin had not simply disappeared: the bottle had preserved the old man’s mystics, and Baiyin had gained another one or two hundred years of spiritual lifespan while helping Xuanyi watch spirit artifacts and refine their baleful radiance. Xuanyi described this as a reciprocal arrangement, not a continuation of Baiyin’s Dao lineage. (Chapters 1592–1593)
Jingyi Mountain’s lasting ties
Xuanyi’s dealings remained relevant through the rare materials he obtained. Kuangyu brought Ximing a piece of Cold Cloud Heart Iron, saying Xuanyi had acquired it and asking to exchange it for Consecration Silver Xuanyi once possessed. Ximing ultimately gave her the Silver, then returned the iron for delivery to Master Dingyang, tying Xuanyi’s acquisition to the Li family’s armor work; no later transfer to Xuanyi is confirmed. (Chapter 1677)
In a later reflection, Ximing connected his remaining questions about Jingyi Mountain. He inferred that the sect’s separation from the Southern Sea may have been a contingency in case the Bright Yang affair threatened Mount Qusi, and that Xuanyi’s continued closeness to Mount Qusi explained why he still acted like a senior brother. This is Ximing’s interpretation rather than a direct explanation from Xuanyi. (Chapter 1783)
Appearance and personality
Xuanyi appears unexpectedly young and carries himself with an elegant, easy manner. He is consistently cordial toward Li Ximing and prefers to mediate when disputes threaten to become costly, though he is also practical about withdrawing when other dangers could trap him. (Chapters 1399–1400, 1558, 1592)
Abilities and cultivation
Xuanyi is identified as a Daoist Master and uses divine ability, but no personal cultivation realm or stage is specified. His most clearly explained capability is the inherited Pure Corner Merit Bottle and its narrow conditions for holding a cultivator. (Chapters 1399–1400, 1593)
Pure Corner Merit Bottle
The Pure Corner Merit Bottle, also called the Black Cloud Silver Sparrow Bottle, is a lineage treasure passed down from Xuanyi’s master. Xuanyi distinguishes the burden of carrying the bottle from its entry limit: carrying it is fatal to someone whose fate is too weak, while a person whose life has greater weight cannot enter it. Purple Mansion cultivators are also beyond its capacity because they have cultivated a Shanyang Mansion. Baiyin was suitable, and after entering the bottle he retained mystics no weaker than when alive and had another one or two hundred years of spiritual lifespan. This is not a true continuation of Baiyin’s Dao lineage; he instead helps Xuanyi watch over spirit artifacts and refine their baleful radiance. (Chapters 1400, 1592–1593)
Divine ability
Xuanyi’s divine ability weakened the kasaya around Baiyin until it fell apart, and later forced open Baiyin’s storage pouch. Its name, activation, and full limits remain unknown. (Chapter 1399)
Relationships
- Li Ximing: Xuanyi and Ximing share spoils and negotiate Baiyin’s future, then cooperate again around Hongxue Gate, its hidden realm, and a later materials exchange. Ximing’s later understanding of Jingyi Mountain’s separation relies on what he learned through these encounters. (Chapters 1399–1400, 1558, 1560, 1592–1593, 1677, 1783)
- Baiyin: Baiyin chose to accompany Xuanyi and became the suitable bearer of the Pure Corner Merit Bottle. Their arrangement preserves Baiyin’s spiritual existence while giving Xuanyi help with spirit artifacts. (Chapters 1400, 1592–1593)
- Jingyi Mountain and Mount Qusi: Jingyi Mountain is based in the Eastern Sea, while Xuanyi remains close to Mount Qusi after its separation from the Southern Sea. Ximing interprets that connection as a possible safeguard for the Bright Yang affair. (Chapter 1783)
Items
Xuanyi carries the Pure Corner Merit Bottle, also known as the Black Cloud Silver Sparrow Bottle, a treasure inherited from his master. It remains in his possession in the latest direct account, where Baiyin appears from it and speaks with Li Ximing. (Chapters 1400, 1592–1593)
