Wenhu

Wenhu, born Shi Wenya, was the master of Hidden Cloud Cave. An experienced Southern Sea schemer, he tried to survive between the Li family and his Purple Mansion patrons, but his attempts to preserve room for maneuver ended in imprisonment and execution. (Chapters 1028–1029, 1069, 1115–1116)

Biography

Between rival patrons

Wenhu came from Mount Xiaoshi and achieved his Immortal Foundation in the Southern Sea under Chidu's guidance. He later settled in Jiangbei, where Hidden Cloud Cave became one of the Mifan three sects backed by stronger powers. After years of pressure on Moongaze's northern shores, Li Ximing's Purple Mansion advancement abruptly reversed their position. Wenhu sought intercession through Li Minggong and An Siwei, surrendered offerings and explained his connection to Baiye Capital Immortal Dao. He promised that Chidu would personally apologize within three months, hoping his patron's name would preserve his life. (Chapter 1028)

Ximing set the matter aside provisionally, but release did not free Wenhu from competing obligations. Ping Wangzi warned that leniency could be withdrawn and urged him to choose a master. Wenhu understood that Baiye was harder to appease than the newly advanced Ximing, whom he still regarded as comparatively righteous. He resented having to answer to both sides while lacking the power to determine either side's policy. His later strategy followed from that pressure: appear to resist enough to satisfy his patrons, while conceding enough to avoid becoming an enduring enemy of the Li family. (Chapters 1029, 1069)

Calculated concessions and capture

Wenhu deliberately refused to hold Hongfu Mountain, although a fortified defense with four Foundation Establishment cultivators could have limited territorial losses. He instead expected Miaoshui to surrender, Zhouwei to seize the mountain and wound him, and Baiye's subsequent intervention to settle the dispute without leaving him responsible for the outcome. The plan sought safety through an appearance of inadequacy rather than outright defection. Li Zhouwei cornered him before that arrangement could work, however, while Ding Weizeng's arrival deprived him of the reassurance of his subordinates. Wenhu had earlier persecuted the Ding family, killing many and uprooting the survivors; the man he had scorned now stood with the Li family against him. (Chapters 1069, 1287)

Despite an opening chest wound and the suppression of his Hurricane Ghost Yin foundation, Wenhu recovered his composure and fought with defensive talismans, ghostly winds and deception. Zhouwei broke through the counters and located his escaping body, capturing him alive. Baiye cultivators challenged the seizure, but Zhouwei maintained that Wenhu had deceived a Daoist Master and carried him away. He delivered Wenhu to Ximing for imprisonment and later interrogation. The accusation rested on the promised apology that Chidu had failed to fulfill, making Wenhu personally answerable for a superior's absence. (Chapters 1069–1070, 1077, 1115)

Bargaining for a final chance

Over a year later, Wenhu remained alive with sealed cultivation and incompletely healed wounds. Ximing considered exchanging him for An Siwei, but judged that returning someone with his knowledge of Mount Xiaoshi and Mifan to Baiye would be dangerous. Wenhu also could not simply enter Li service without provoking his former patron and violating the rules between Purple Mansion powers. When summoned, he recognized that he was a bargaining chip whose value might soon be exhausted. He offered Hidden Cloud's inheritance and claimed knowledge of a concealed Mifan lineage in the Southern Sea to prolong the conversation. (Chapter 1115)

He surrendered the Xiaoshi Tombwind Yin-Conducting Art, another cave's Floating Cloud Body method and half of the Song of the Feathered Guest. His account mixed real contacts with misleading claims about the remaining inheritance, but Ximing already possessed information that exposed the deception. When confronted, Wenhu refused to cast himself as a passive petitioner: he said that a lifetime of schemes entitled him to claim success when he won and accept defeat when he lost. Ximing answered by reducing him to ash with heavenly light. His techniques remained with the Li family, while his death prompted Ximing to reflect that skill and calculation could still fail without sufficient fortune. (Chapters 1115–1116)

Appearance and personality

Wenhu is a burly man, roughly twice an ordinary man's size, with black facial markings and a tiger-patterned Daoist robe. His deferential speech masks careful calculation. He is frightened by stronger powers but retains the resolve to fight under pressure and, at the end, insists on the agency behind his own schemes. (Chapters 1028, 1069, 1116)

Abilities and cultivation

Hurricane Ghost Yin

Wenhu achieved Immortal Foundation in the Southern Sea and cultivated Hurricane Ghost Yin of the Xiukui lineage. Its associated Xiaoshi Tombwind Yin-Conducting Art is a fourth-grade Foundation Establishment method. He can exhale black qi into a violent gale, spreading frost and ghostly influence; rain enhances the manifestation of his foundation. His accumulated cultivation exceeded Zhouwei's during their fight, but Bright Yang directly counters this path. Zhouwei's flame banner dispersed the Yin qi, while Ximing's final heavenly light destroyed Wenhu without leaving a cultivation phenomenon. (Chapters 1028, 1069, 1115–1116)

Wind imitation, concealment and defense

By biting his tongue and spending blood essence, Wenhu imitated part of the Heavy Abyssal Gale's profundity through Hurricane Ghost Yin. The resulting dark radiance briefly broke Zhouwei's surrounding heavenly light. It was an imitation rather than the genuine gale, and Zhouwei's familiarity with the true force allowed him to recover quickly. Wenhu then combined black dharma light with an escaping concealed body, but Zhouwei shattered the attack and struck the real figure out of the air. Experience and layered spellcraft extended his resistance without overcoming his injuries or the incompatible Dao matchup. (Chapter 1069)

A white jade defensive artifact released shielding talismans and bought him time against the halberd, but repeated impacts cracked it and Zhouwei's radiant art seized the shield. Wenhu also possessed half of Song of the Feathered Guest, inherited from his master; the manual describes folding feathers into a robe for defense. Possessing that incomplete higher-grade art does not establish that he mastered its full protection. By his final interrogation, cultivation seals and a seal on his mouth prevented normal resistance and spellcasting. (Chapters 1069, 1115)

Relationships

  • Li Ximing: Temporarily spared him, later held him captive, took his inherited methods and executed him after exposing his deception. (Chapters 1028–1029, 1077, 1115–1116)
  • Li Zhouwei: Defeated and captured him despite his attempts to manage the territorial conflict through concessions. (Chapters 1069–1070, 1077)
  • Chidu and Baiye Capital Immortal Dao: Guided his earlier advancement and used Hidden Cloud Cave as a subordinate power. Their competing demands shaped his failed survival strategy. (Chapters 1028–1029, 1069, 1115)
  • Ding Weizeng: A man he had scorned whose service to the Li family disrupted Wenhu's expectations during the ambush. (Chapter 1069)

Items

His white jade defensive artifact emitted shielding talismans but was cracked and seized during the fight with Zhouwei. In captivity he inscribed three texts onto jade slips for Ximing: the Xiaoshi Tombwind Yin-Conducting Art from his own lineage, the Xiaoshi Sky-Cleansing Scattered Cloud Art that he had taken from Fu Dou, and the incomplete Song of the Feathered Guest inherited from his master. The second text is a Floating Cloud Body technique; Wenhu's own Immortal Foundation was Hurricane Ghost Yin. (Chapters 1069, 1115–1116)
