Tian Shoushui
Tian Shoushui is a veteran whose long loyalty to Li Mutian becomes a family bond: Mutian helps establish his household, and Shoushui in turn raises Li Changhu as his own. He supports his daughter’s marriage into the Li family, then helps the household through Changhu’s murder before settling into village life. (Chapters 10, 16–18, 32, 45)
Biography
A brother to Mutian and father to two households
Tian Shoushui has followed Li Mutian since the age of five. At twelve he enlisted alongside Ren Ping’an, and the three became close during their military service. Once they returned to the village, Mutian left that life behind, secured fields for Shoushui and arranged his marriage. Shoushui regards the Li family as his own and helped raise Mutian’s younger brother, Li Changhu. (Chapter 10)
When Mutian proposes a marriage between Tian Shoushui’s daughter, Tian Yun, and Li Xiangping, Shoushui is relieved: he has long recognized his daughter’s feelings and is glad they are returned. In the same conversation, he reports noises near the Yuan family ancestral tomb. Mutian admits he had the five remaining Yuan family members put to death, making Shoushui’s otherwise ordinary observation a reminder that the old feud may not be settled. (Chapter 10)
Shoushui’s family ties turn to grief when an attacker stabs Changhu amid the refugees. Shoushui pursues the fleeing youth into the reeds but loses him in the crowd. He and Ren Ping’an later carry Changhu’s body home. Mutian assigns Shoushui to help Liu Linfeng manage the displaced villagers, even as Shoushui mourns. When Old Xu returns with the dead attacker and identifies him as a Yuan descendant, Shoushui is among those called to confirm the identity; Li Tongya calls the killing vengeance for Changhu. (Chapters 16–18)
By the time Tian Yun is expecting a child, Shoushui is an older man who spends his days in the village. He carves a wooden horse for the baby and continues to chat with Mutian. His later appearance is domestic and quiet, in marked contrast to the military service and family violence that shaped his earlier years. (Chapters 32, 45)
Appearance and personality
Shoushui is shorter than Li Changhu; years later, his hair has grayed and he looks elderly. He is warm with his family and old companions, but his pursuit of Changhu’s attacker shows a forceful response to danger and loss. (Chapters 10, 16, 32)
Abilities and cultivation
Shoushui served in the military from age twelve, but the cited scenes give no named martial or cultivation technique, spiritual rank, or supernatural ability. His role in the village is practical: he helps care for the refugees and makes a wooden toy for his expected grandchild. (Chapters 10, 17, 32)
