Mu Yalu
Mu Yalu crossed the border from Mount Yue to bargain for peace with the Li Family, then built a place for herself through marriage and motherhood while guarding her son from suspicion about his bloodline.
Biography
A Peace Bargain with the Li Family
After the Li Family’s forces raided Mount Yue, Yalu arrived with tribute and captives her people had recovered, offering trade, political marriage, or tribute in exchange for an end to the killing. She identified herself as Mu Jiaoman’s younger sister and volunteered to be the first to marry into the Li Family. Her proposal secured an agreement, but joining the Li household left her alone among unfamiliar customs and with little support from her own clan. Li Xuanxuan took her as a concubine, and Yalu had to learn how to live within the family whose protection she had negotiated. (Chapters 116–117)
Motherhood and the Mulu Bloodline
Yalu named her son Li Yuanjiao and guarded him fiercely when Li Jingtian’s questions about a possible Mulu connection to Jianixi frightened her; Yalu insisted that Jianixi had no tie to her family and would not let suspicion fall on the child. The Li elders had valued her ancient Mulu bloodline as a way to influence Mount Yue, but her own attachment to Yuanjiao shaped their household life: after he was found to have a spiritual orifice, her standing improved, and she welcomed his visits while he trained away from home. Nearing seventy, she died at the Li residence after her injured son returned to see her; her last concern was his safety. (Chapters 134–137, 147, 177–178, 238 and 485)
Appearance and personality
Yalu first appears as a beautiful young woman with sly eyes, carrying herself cautiously as she enters the Li Family’s territory. She quickly adopts its etiquette, bargains with tact, and later shows a fiercely protective maternal instinct. In old age she is a frail mortal, approaching seventy. (Chapters 116–117, 134, 137 and 485)
Abilities and cultivation
Yalu is a mortal, not a cultivator. Her family descends from Mount Yue shamans and has an ancient Mulu bloodline, which the Li elders valued for the chance that her children might possess spiritual orifices. (Chapters 135, 147 and 485)
Relationships
- Li Xuanxuan: Her husband and the Li Family head who accepted her peace proposal and took her as a concubine. (Chapters 116–117)
- Li Yuanjiao: Her son, whose lineage she defends and whose success improves her position in the household. (Chapters 134–137 and 177–178)
- Mu Jiaoman: Her elder sister and Mount Yue leader, whose clan sent Yalu to negotiate with the Li Family. (Chapter 116)
- Li Jingtian: A Li Family elder whose questions about Jianixi’s possible connection to the Mulu line alarm Yalu. (Chapters 136–137)
Items
Yalu’s delegation presents a white spirit fruit as an apology for Mount Yue’s past aggression. It is a diplomatic tribute from her people, not a personal possession. (Chapter 116)
