A loyal but compromised steward
Chengpan was promoted from a branch into the island’s main family and served for years on the western shore. During an inquiry into blood-script records, he was accused of taking a large share of the collected wealth; the family recalled him for questioning, but the later investigation officially charged Li Hun instead and left Chengpan as a hall assistant. Chengqi defended him throughout the dispute, deepening Chengpan’s gratitude and loyalty to his brother. (Chapters 1200–1202, 1228, 1292)
Conversion beside his brother
In battle against Buddhist cultivators, Chengpan was badly injured and knelt as Li Chengqi was transformed into a venomous creature. Chengpan subdued the creature and then pledged himself to the Bright Enlightenment path, his fear giving way to clarity. A later disclosure states that Chengqi eventually devoured him and turned his brother into a weapon; what remained of Chengpan’s awareness or agency is not described. (Chapters 1450–1451, 1623)
