Fuxia

Fuxia is an elder monk whose sincere belief in karmic retribution brings him into conflict with Kongheng’s Buddhist principles. (Chapters 990–992)

Biography

Karmic justice and Kongheng

Fuxia comes from North Demon-Subduing Temple to challenge Kongheng’s understanding of Buddhist law. He defends turning a hunter into a deer after the man killed a deer to obtain food for his ailing wife, arguing that all life is equal and the transformation was lenient punishment. Kongheng counters that the man’s wife died as a result, exposing the human cost of Fuxia’s judgment. Fuxia remains devout, but his certainty leaves little room for compassion toward the people caught in his doctrine. (Chapters 989–992)

The Pure Land’s promise

Fuxia fights Kongheng and Li Ximing while urging Kongheng to accept the Wrathful Manifestation path. His Merciful One’s Dharma Body and tiger-form robe make him a dangerous opponent, but sustaining the body is taxing. When a Pure Land appears, Fuxia begs Kongheng to proclaim him its Emperor Scion and return with him to the temple. Kongheng refuses; Fuxia dies in the ensuing confrontation, leaving a relic that Kongheng takes with him. (Chapters 993–997)

Appearance and personality

Fuxia is an old monk with bronze-colored eyes and a face marked by golden lacquer. He is sincerely devout and believes in equal regard for all life, yet his fierce certainty makes him harsh toward anyone he judges to have violated karmic law. (Chapters 990, 992)

Abilities and cultivation

Fuxia cultivated a Merciful One’s Dharma Body himself and once held the Merciful One’s position. His golden body withstands the Radiant Origin Pass, and his robe can become a one-horned tiger; he also releases pink mist and uses a staff in battle. Maintaining the Dharma Body consumes substantial mana, limiting how freely he can move. (Chapters 991–994)
