Balsas

Balsas is the Alumera subordinate who controls Green Valley Ville. He recognizes the apparent resurrection of the newly arrived refugees as a military resource and tries to use their willingness to return from death against Lu Cheng, drawing Han Xiao into the settlement's local struggle.

Biography

Escape from Germinal and the Aquamarine War

Balsas initially reacts to Han Xiao's arrival with fear and careful observation, sending an assistant rather than approaching the famous killer himself. After discovering that the refugees can revive and will work for small rewards, he imagines them as a cheap, inexhaustible army and uses them as expendable buffers against beasts and Lu Cheng's troops. Han Xiao instead helps Lu Cheng offer them better incentives, stripping Balsas of his supposed trump card. Balsas considers retreat, but Alumera's representatives insist on battle while secretly preparing an escape vehicle. He abandons Green Valley Ville during the attack and flees with them; Han Xiao catches the vehicle, kills its guards, and confronts him. Convinced he will not survive, Balsas stops pleading, asks for a quick death, and is shot through the temple. (Chapters 147, 151, and 154–160)

Appearance and personality

Balsas is a short, thin, bald Black man with gloomy triangular eyes. He is anxious, cautious, and deferential toward people with greater power, yet exploitative toward those he considers disposable. His confidence depends on an advantage he believes he controls. When escape finally becomes impossible, however, he faces the certainty of death more calmly than his earlier fearfulness suggests. Abilities and class
