The Autarch rules Icklid, a city that moves as his chariot, and expands the Ways into a vast network Lucretia must navigate to return home. His grand working requires bodies to continue, drawing Selfia and Aiden Darke into investigative and coercive duties. Later recollection describes the Autarch's relationship with his creations as exploitative: he makes tools for a purpose and uses them unscrupulously, leaving a legacy embedded in people who outlive his direct rule.
