Hank Howard
Hank Howard is a Zone 1 leader and gunslinger whose practical authority offers Randidly a model of power rooted in local responsibility. He protects his people through negotiation, preparation, and direct violence when necessary, while refusing to let stronger outsiders decide that his community's independence is expendable. (Chapters 489, 506, 579, and 1363)
Biography
Zone 1 and the Erickson conflict
Hank meets Randidly while Zone 1 is struggling with political pressure, dangerous monsters, and Erickson Steel's growing importance. He evaluates the newcomer as both a possible ally and a destabilizing force, choosing cooperation without surrendering local judgment. His Level 43 Gunslinger abilities give him personal credibility, but his larger contribution is translating combat strength into protection for families and settlements that cannot simply follow Randidly from crisis to crisis. (Chapters 489–579)
Hank's relationship with Alan and the wider Howard family makes every regional decision personal. He balances the need for steel, military coordination, and information against the risk that centralized powers will absorb Zone 1's choices. Working with Randidly succeeds because each recognizes the other's sphere of responsibility. Hank is willing to accept extraordinary help, yet he continues speaking as a leader accountable to people who will remain after the wandering powerhouse leaves. (Chapters 506–579)
Alliances beyond the first campaign
Later crises repeatedly bring Hank back into contact with Donnyton's network and the institutions forming around Expira. He contributes as an experienced defender rather than trying to imitate image specialists or Nexus elites. That steadiness matters during periods when rapidly changing power systems encourage leaders to treat ordinary governance as obsolete; Hank continues measuring success by whether people can live, trade, and make decisions after the battle ends. (Chapters 902–1045)
His later appearances show that alliance with Randidly does not erase distance or disagreement. Hank supports broader defenses while preserving the habits that made him effective in Zone 1: direct assessment, economical speech, and suspicion of demands justified only by rank. The result is a supporting role with durable consequences—he helps connect independent Earth communities without requiring them to become copies of Donnyton or Kharon. (Chapters 1249–1363 and 2215)
Appearance and personality
Hank presents himself as a seasoned frontier fighter whose weapons, stance, and attention are practical rather than ceremonial. His manner is controlled and economical, especially beside more theatrical System combatants. The narrative emphasizes the watchfulness of a man accustomed to judging threats before they reach his people more consistently than it supplies fixed decorative details. (Chapters 489–506)
He is pragmatic, protective, and resistant to intimidation. Hank can negotiate with stronger figures without pretending their interests automatically align with his own, and he is willing to use violence when delay would endanger civilians. Family and civic duty keep his decisions grounded: advancement matters because it expands what he can defend, not because he wants recognition from the System or the Nexus. (Chapters 489–579 and 1363)
Abilities and progression
Hank is a Level 43 Gunslinger when his capabilities are first described. His Class combines firearm accuracy, threat assessment, and the composure to act under pressure, making him most effective when he can choose lines of fire and coordinate a defense. The covered chapters show continued competence and participation but do not establish a reliable chronological series of later formal levels or Class evolutions. (Chapters 496–506)
His most important limitation is strategic rather than technical: even a powerful Earth Class cannot answer every Nexus-scale threat directly. Hank compensates through preparation, alliances, and knowledge of the communities he protects. He uses Randidly's exceptional force as one part of a plan rather than allowing it to replace local defenders, which keeps his leadership useful when the protagonist is absent. (Chapters 506–579 and 902–1045)
Relationships
- Randidly Ghosthound: A powerful ally whose interventions Hank accepts selectively, with mutual respect rooted in their shared instinct to protect communities without owning them.
- Alan Howard: Family and fellow defender; their bond ties Hank's political decisions to the people who bear their consequences.
- Tatiana: A counterpart in the wider network of Earth leaders whose institutional work helps independent settlements coordinate.
Items
Hank's firearms are essential to his Gunslinger role, but the covered chapters do not establish a single named weapon with a sufficiently distinct history for a separate article.
