Chrysanthemum is introduced as Thea’s enormous bear, a creature large enough to swallow several people and already accepted as a member of her traveling group. The bear repeatedly carries or supports Thea in combat and becomes part of the force surrounding Donnyton’s widening wars. Later examination reveals an unsettling contradiction: Chrysanthemum reacts to others and develops an image, yet appears lifeless and hollow to refined senses. That unresolved condition matters more than a simple label of pet or undead construct.
