Golden Key

The Golden Key is a purchasable key that carries one person to the Midnight Inn and becomes Lex's earliest method of recruiting guests beyond randomly opened doors. (Chapters 8–9)

History

Invitations and lifelines

Lex initially buys keys from the Midnight Store at an escalating weekly price and leaves them where likely guests can discover them without tracing the Inn to him. What begins as a risky invitation mechanism becomes a life-changing point of entry for people such as Harry and, later, a standard emergency route—except in places such as the Dream realm that deliberately strip or exclude them. Abilities and properties

• A key transports one person to the Inn once; the individual key is consumed by that journey. (Chapter 8)
• The Store price rises with repeated purchases before resetting, limiting indiscriminate early distribution. (Chapter 9)
• Certain hostile environments can exclude the keys, so possession does not guarantee an escape route everywhere. (Chapter 2202)
