Zagan
Zagan is the Ocean King, an immense sentient monster whose search for a treasure devastates Babylon before the Midnight Inn recruits him. He later reaches the Heaven Immortal realm, although a deceptive Spiritual Tribulation leaves him unable to accept that the advancement is real. (Chapters 364–368, 689–710, 971, 1473, 1937–1938, 2149)
Biography
From Ocean King to Inn employee
Zagan rises from the sea at Babylon while tracing a valuable aura, freezing lesser monsters with the weight of his gaze and continuing a battle whose restrained force has already devastated the town. He considers challenging the unknown power claiming the area, but the Innkeeper's deterrent convinces him that the treasure is not worth that risk. The Inn later turns the encounter into recruitment: Zagan passes a worker test, gives up a scale that can command weaker Crystal-realm monsters, and enters seclusion as his employment offers a safer route through tribulation. (Chapters 364–368, 689–710)
Zagan spends years meditating on the threshold of the Heaven Immortal realm, contributing little direct labor while the Inn treats his strength as a strategic reserve. He eventually completes the advancement, but the Spiritual Tribulation has used realistic Farham illusions so effectively that he assumes every subsequent event remains another test. Even recognizing Lex as a Heaven Immortal seems too implausible to accept. By his latest appearance, Zagan is genuinely advanced yet psychologically trapped in an ordeal that has already ended, a limitation no amount of raw force resolves. (Chapters 971, 1325, 1473, 1937–1938, 2149)
Appearance and personality
In his natural form, Zagan is a vast ocean behemoth whose emergence resembles a nightmare rising from deep water. At the Inn he can assume a pale human form with straight black hair and the appearance of a school-aged boy. He is patient, calculating about overwhelming threats, and extraordinarily slow by human standards; his immortal sense of time makes prolonged sleep or meditation feel unremarkable. (Chapters 364–366, 690, 2147)
Abilities and cultivation
Ocean King authority
Zagan's gaze and aura immobilize or command weaker monsters, while a shed scale carries enough authority for its holder to summon obedient monster forces. His restrained conflict at Babylon alters the town on a catastrophic scale, and Aegis, an Earth Immortal, is treated as a genuine opponent rather than an easy victor. Zagan nevertheless retreats when faced with an aura he judges potentially superior, showing disciplined threat assessment rather than fearlessness. (Chapters 364–366, 373, 698–710)
Heaven Immortal tribulation
Zagan completes the physical advancement to Heaven Immortal after years near the threshold. His unusual Spiritual Tribulation introduces the Farham through endlessly convincing scenarios, and passing it does not end their psychological effect: he continues interpreting reality as illusion. The result leaves his cultivation intact but his situational judgment compromised, since accurate evidence is dismissed whenever it seems too improbable. (Chapters 1473, 1937–1938, 2149)
Relationships
- Aegis: Aegis fights Zagan during the Babylon disaster and later keeps a fragment of the sought treasure as bait, making their conflict part of the wider effort to control the Ocean King. (Chapters 365–366, 373, 382)
- Lex Williams: Lex recruits Zagan as external Inn staff and uses the Innkeeper's reputation, protection, and promised benefits to redirect the monster's strength. (Chapters 368, 689–710, 971)
- Crystal-realm monsters: Weaker monsters defer to Zagan's authority, and his scale allows the Inn's allies to assemble them as an emergency force. (Chapters 698–710)
Items
Zagan's shed scale preserves his monster authority and lets its holder command weaker creatures from the Crystal realm. It functions as an extension of his status rather than an independent weapon, and no finalized item article is assigned to it. (Chapters 698–710)
