Vera Joel is a young oracle whose unusually useful glimpses of opportunity make her one of Lex Williams' most reliable informal advisers. Her cheerful interest in profit masks both the physical cost of divination and the danger created by the true scope of her gift. (Chapters 80, 85, 1753–1754)

Biography

A profitable instinct and imprisonment

Vera arrives at the Inn with her mother, Kristine, already carrying the aura of a new oracle and cultivating at Foundation Initial. She follows a feeling that approaching the Innkeeper will earn her a reward, voluntarily lets John study her cultivation, and proves the instinct that has repeatedly profited her family. That same talent creates pressure rather than freedom: after Earth's authorities discover the Inn, Vera becomes a political prisoner whose access to Golden Keys is tightly controlled, even while her irregular visions warn her that returning is necessary to escape catastrophe. Oracle broker and hidden inheritance

Once able to operate at the Inn, Vera organizes other diviners and turns foresight into practical introductions. She connects Lex with Haraash for instruction in concealing karma and destiny, structuring her own payment around the future benefits she expects Lex to receive. Her confidence is bounded by candor: she explains that high-level forces can invalidate her visions, that divination burdens the practitioner, and that excessive use can cause illness or death. The approaching Nexus event interrupts her ordinary work and forces Vera to confront the source of her gift. She reveals that her father divided an Essence Wormhole among oracles, that stronger portions permit clearer futures, and that exposing her full range could reduce her to a Dao Lord's captive servant. Distrusting her father, she gives Lex the information needed to disrupt his plan and deliberately erases her own memory of the disclosure. She later teaches Lex how the Nexus event resets destiny and can clear indirect karmic consequences, while her latest reaction is to leave an oracle gathering and repeatedly inspect her own future as the crisis draws near. Appearance and personality

Vera is introduced as a sixteen-year-old human girl. Her Foundation cultivation does not prevent an exhausting climb when prophecy has already taxed her, underlining that her gift carries a bodily cost. Ordinarily mischievous, commercially minded, and irreverent, she can become guarded and exacting when a prediction threatens her autonomy; she is willing to trust Lex with secrets, but uses memory erasure to limit what even she can later reveal. Oracle foresight

Vera receives visions, profitable intuitions, and directional impressions about beneficial encounters. She can use those insights to identify the right person or moment rather than merely narrating a fixed future, as when she arrives for John's test and later locates Haraash without being told where he lives. The future remains mutable: entities above the level her gift can account for can change an outcome, and the strain rises with the difficulty of the secret being observed. Essence Wormhole and destiny knowledge

Her exceptional range derives from a fragment of the Essence Wormhole distributed by her father. Absorbing more of its energy clarifies futures involving stronger cultivators, but advertising that capacity would attract overwhelming coercion. Vera also understands the distinction between comparatively fixed fate and changeable destiny, the negative karma accumulated by oracles, and the Nexus event's temporary reset. Its approach suppresses or distorts oracle abilities, leaving her latest dependable contribution as expert interpretation and preparation rather than unrestricted prediction.
