Slag

Slag is a mid-Golden Core Jotun soldier and the first Imperial serviceman to enter the Midnight Inn. His wounded arrival becomes the Empire's first practical reconnaissance of the establishment, and the experience later motivates him to transfer into the Historical Anomalies Department.

Biography

Reconnaissance at the Inn

Slag reaches the Inn with debilitating wounds while fleeing danger, but treats the unfamiliar refuge as a mission rather than a holiday. Once partially recovered, he observes guests, questions local conditions, and reports the Inn's services to his superiors. When General Ragnar arrives, Slag recommends the Recovery Room, Battle Ax, and Mystery Trial from direct experience, helping the Empire approach the Inn through informed cooperation instead of rumor. Turning experience into specialization

Slag helps Alexander enter Jotun service, linking the Inn's Earth guests to the Empire's military structure. His exposure to unexplained inheritances and ancient forces also changes his own career: he requests transfer to Historical Anomalies, where his otherwise obscure knowledge becomes useful during an Imperial investigation. By his latest appearance he is still disciplined enough to answer senior officers directly and treat recognition as duty rather than personal prestige. (Chapters 218 and 528)

Appearance and personality

Slag is a ninety-nine-year-old human soldier introduced bleeding from the forehead and badly injured in one arm and leg. Even while limping, he assumes a defensive stance, surveys his environment, and prioritizes reconnaissance over full recovery. He is formal, disciplined, observant, and uncomfortable with casual recreation, but not rigid enough to ignore evidence that the Inn's unusual services can benefit the Empire. Abilities and cultivation

Mid-Golden Core cultivation

Slag is explicitly a mid-Golden Core cultivator whose foundation remains secure despite debilitating battlefield wounds. His cultivation lets him recover quickly with rest and Inn treatment, but does not make him immune to injury or remove the need for reconnaissance and support. Soldiering and anomaly research

Slag applies military threat assessment, disciplined reporting, and first-hand testing to unknown environments. After transferring departments, he can recognize ancient heritage patterns and reason that a restriction concerns age rather than cultivation.
