Ragnar

Ragnar Asulf is a Heaven-Immortal general of the Jotun Empire and one of its youngest rising military leaders. He first encounters the Midnight Inn while commanding the war on Vegus Minima, then uses the Inn as neutral ground, a source of strategic opportunities, and the place where his advancement and later zombification crisis become public.

Biography

War on Vegus Minima and the Midnight Inn

Ragnar commands from a planetary holographic display, processing battlefield reports through spiritual sense while searching for the hidden mechanism behind the demon war. The Inn interests him less as a curiosity than as an unpredictable strategic power. After seeing its portals, protections, and a Celestial acting for the Innkeeper, he restrains conflict with rival Devils, evaluates the establishment as a high-level danger, and negotiates with Earth's representatives because destroying the formation on Vegus matters more than claiming personal credit. (Chapters 91–125 and 147–168)

His decisions combine loyalty to the empire with a particular concern for humans beyond its borders. He records Loretta's aura, reports the classified status of Earth, and continues investigating threats that his clearance cannot explain. Although he can be domineering toward weaker delegations, he accepts that the Innkeeper stands outside his chain of command and repeatedly avoids actions that would endanger civilians or provoke an unnecessary confrontation. This discipline helps turn a first contact into a durable strategic relationship. (Chapters 118–136, 147–193, and 275–314)

Advancement, defeat, and the zombification curse

The Inn's rise in star level gives Ragnar an opportunity to advance within the Heaven Immortal realm. He accepts the need for a long retreat, faces a black-lightning tribulation without defensive shelter, and passes the first mark despite injuries that ordinary recovery facilities cannot treat. The achievement brings him an audience with Emperor Jotun, where Ragnar puts imperial duty ahead of embarrassment and shares concerns serious enough to have challenged his certainty about the empire's situation. (Chapters 446, 458–460, and 515–519)

Confidence after that advance leads him to accept a public challenge from Warheil, a devil of comparable realm. Warheil overwhelms him, curses him with the original zombification process, and leaves the general facing transformation into a subordinate demon. Ragnar does not withdraw from duty after his body heals. He works with the emperor, Clarissa, Charles, and Pel to prevent the transformation and pursue a true cure; by the later chapters a difficult Henali method suppresses the immediate outcome, while research continues because prevention is not the same as removing the curse. (Chapters 719–722, 1100, 1544–1546, and 1626)

Appearance and personality

Ragnar normally appears in thick military armor that makes him look far bulkier than he is. When he removes it for his tribulation, Lex sees a toned rather than massive physique. He is more than three thousand five hundred years old but considered remarkably young for his realm and rank, a contrast reflected in his disciplined bearing and the ease with which older generals treat him as a younger peer. (Chapters 120, 123, 275, 314, 432, and 515)

He is controlled, dutiful, observant, and comfortable asserting authority, yet not needlessly reckless in command. Ragnar can insult enemies or test potential allies while still respecting neutral ground and the cost of escalation. His pride becomes a weakness against Warheil, but his response to defeat is practical rather than self-pitying: he accepts assistance, studies the curse, and continues serving while a solution is developed. (Chapters 112–124, 147–168, 515–519, and 719–722)

Abilities and cultivation

Heaven-Immortal cultivation

Ragnar has been a Heaven Immortal for nearly a century when he passes the first mark at the Inn. The black-lightning tribulation increases his cultivation but causes damage severe enough to require rare medicine stored aboard his command carrier. Later accounts praise him for averaging one Heaven-Immortal level per century, yet only the first mark is individually confirmed; his exact latest number is therefore unknown. (Chapters 515–519, 763, 1474, 1545, 1928, and 2132)

Spiritual sense and command-scale awareness

Ragnar can process a planet's live military picture through spiritual sense, remember enormous streams of data, scan locations for traps, and monitor spatial or energetic anomalies alongside imperial technology. His senses support strategic judgment rather than replacing it: hidden formations, classified information, and beings above his authority can still escape his understanding. He pairs perception with logistics, fleets, formations, and disciplined delegation, making his greatest demonstrated strength the coordination of power across an army rather than a single named attack. (Chapters 91–92, 112–125, 147, 275–314, and 527–535)

Zombification and resistance

Warheil's curse is a persistent hostile state capable of transforming Ragnar into a zombie under the devil's control. Ordinary physical healing removes the wounds of their fight but not the underlying process. A resource-intensive Henali method later prevents the transformation, while Ragnar and Charles pursue a body-cultivation technique that could resist or cure it. Holy aura is considered as a countermeasure, but its natural restriction to Angels prevents Ragnar from simply adopting it as his own power. (Chapters 720–722, 1545–1546, and 1626)

Stage / Realm / AbilityChapter(s)Notes
Heaven Immortal realmBefore 91; confirmed 518Ragnar has been a Heaven Immortal for just under a century when Chapter 518 gives the first exact retrospective confirmation. His earlier cultivation stages occur off page.
First Heaven-Immortal mark515–518Ragnar survives a single black-lightning tribulation and stabilizes increased cultivation. Jotun then explicitly identifies the advance as passing through the first mark.
Warheil's zombification curse720–722Warheil curses Ragnar so that he will become a zombie and fall under Warheil's control. The Inn heals Ragnar's battle wounds, but the curse becomes a continuing condition rather than an immediate formal cultivation loss.
Zombification prevented but not curedBy 1546; 1626A Henali method prevents the transformation, but its requirements make it unsuitable as a general cure. Ragnar and Charles continue developing a body-cultivation solution, so the condition remains controlled rather than conclusively removed.
