Harriot Shelby Ruby Selma Jane

Harriot Shelby Ruby Selma Jane is the female zombie commander who leads the Golden Core undead during the early Midnight Games. Her fragmented mind and failed artificial animation allow her to persist through multiple destroyed bodies, while her theatrical rage and romantic fixations repeatedly undermine the subtlety that survival could otherwise provide. She is distinct from Harriot, Eclipse's later male poodle assistant.

Biography

Arrival with the Golden Core zombies

Harriot arrives at the Inn leading an intelligent, disciplined undead army whose members restrain their urge to attack nearby humans. While soldiers watch the horde with hatred, she focuses on applying makeup and then skips away with the army behind her, presenting playful femininity alongside a strong demonic aura and devious intent. Her control keeps the zombies within the Inn's peace until the Games provide a sanctioned battlefield. (Chapter 146)

Repeated deaths in the Midnight Games

When her Golden Core army spawns beside the Jotun forces, Harriot immediately orders a fight to the death rather than pursuing the match objective pragmatically. Brandon destroys her repeatedly, including a body whose zombie core he crushes, but she transfers into replacement zombies and continues confronting him. Her survival could conceal the ability, yet she curses him after every return and announces her intention to steal his body, making each new host obvious. The zombie army loses rapidly enough that Harriot eventually stops entering later matches herself. (Chapters 179 and 183)

A recurring guest

Harriot's hostility toward Brandon turns into courtship between rounds even though he meets both with the same indifference. At the closing ceremony she sits with other notable guests but pays attention only to Rorick, on whom she has developed another fixation. She later visits the Inn alongside Pramod during the confrontation with Nzaar's raiders, confirming that she remains an independent recurring guest after the Games rather than disappearing with the defeated zombie force. (Chapters 179, 186, and 280)

Appearance and personality

Harriot is a four-foot-tall, ordinary-looking girl whose clean body can pass for human if one overlooks her powerful demonic aura. She carefully applies foundation with a hand mirror, smiles brightly, and frolics rather than marching. Beneath that presentation she has a fragmented mind, obsessive romantic tendencies, and explosive pride. She can command an army and restrain its instincts, but personal rage makes her announce secrets and pursue vendettas long after a tactically minded leader would withdraw. (Chapters 146, 179, and 186)

Abilities and cultivation

Golden Core undead cultivation

Harriot operates at the Golden Core realm and commands zombies of the same realm in battles where spiritual techniques affect an underwater map on a massive scale. Her demonic aura is strong enough to reveal her undead nature despite cosmetics. Zombies are described as inherently weaker than many peers at the same level, and the Jotun and beast forces repeatedly defeat her army, so realm equality does not give her forces equal battlefield effectiveness. (Chapters 146, 179, and 183)

Body transfer and persistence

Destroying Harriot's current body does not end her. During the match against Brandon she reaches at least a third host, and even the destruction of a zombie core fails to stop the transfer. Lex associates this unusual persistence with her “failed artificial animation” condition, but the story does not confirm the mechanism, range, host requirements, or whether she can possess living beings. Her greatest demonstrated limitation is behavioral: immediate shouting reveals which zombie she has entered. (Chapter 179)

Command of undead

Harriot directs a large, intelligent zombie formation and can order immediate all-out combat. Her soldiers already possess enough self-control to observe Inn rules without constant commands, so her leadership is tactical rather than simple puppetry. The Games show that she prioritizes annihilating hated enemies over destroying the objective, and that this aggression contributes to defeat against more disciplined factions. (Chapters 146, 179, and 183)

Relationships

  • Brandon: Brandon repeatedly destroys Harriot's bodies during the Games. She responds first with revenge threats and then unwanted courtship, while he remains indifferent.
  • Rorick: Rorick becomes the sole focus of Harriot's attention during the closing ceremony, reflecting her obsessive romantic disposition.
  • Pramod: Pramod is the more pragmatic demon commander against whom Harriot's impulsive leadership is contrasted; both later revisit the Inn.
  • Harriot: The two share a name only. The other Harriot is a male black poodle and Dao Lord assistant who appears much later.
