Brother Chen

Chen Lee, usually called Brother Chen, is a former Vegus Minima soldier rescued during a suicidal diversion and one of the Midnight Inn's earliest guests. Safety gives him the chance to reunite with his sister Lily, cultivate beyond the limits of his ruined world, and transform battlefield discipline into a successful inter-world trading career.

Biography

From last stand to a new country

Chen and Blane volunteer to draw a zombie horde away from a refugee caravan after their town's defenses collapse. Infected, wounded, and expecting death, they still prepare to detonate their explosives against a stronger zombie so it cannot find the civilians. Lex rescues and heals them instead. Chen responds with gratitude rather than entitlement, asks how others can reach the Inn, and returns to Vegus Minima as soon as he stabilizes because responsibility to the missing caravan outweighs the safety he has just discovered. (Chapters 29–40)

The caravan has already encountered the Jotun reclamation, allowing Chen to find Lily among the new war effort and bring her to the Inn. Years later the siblings run a profitable Guild-room shop supported by exclusive supply chains. Chen reaches Nascent but feels too unfulfilled to risk an immortal breakthrough. A major client tempts them to bypass the Inn's fee, yet he rejects the dangerous shortcut rather than gamble goods and lives for margin; that caution is rewarded when the Inn selects their business for new initiatives. Appearance and personality

Chen is introduced as a battle-worn human soldier with bleeding scratches across his shoulder and chest. In his later merchant role he wears an overcoat called the Matrix-look and keeps a sheathed sword at his hip, partly from vigilance and partly because he enjoys the image. He is fearful when death is immediate but acts anyway, respectful without being naturally submissive, and commercially ambitious without abandoning suspicion or ethics when a deal appears designed to exploit him. Abilities and cultivation

Chen begins at peak Qi Training, stabilizes a Foundation breakthrough after the Inn heals him, and is in the Nascent realm by his later business negotiations. His early strengths are soldiering, tracking, explosives, zombie-core harvesting, and coordinated combat with Blane. No named cultivation technique or supernatural specialty is supplied. He retains his sword and alert habits after becoming a merchant, but avoids the Midnight Games when participation would risk his life without a cause, showing that advancement has not erased practical threat assessment. His later expertise lies in inter-world commerce. Working with Lily, Chen builds supply chains, negotiates large contracts, and uses the Guild room's quality and payment guarantees. Experience teaches him that its one-percent fee is a security mechanism rather than wasted profit; outside it, stronger buyers could simply kill and rob him. This is professional judgment rather than a system-derived power, and the narrative does not show him personally producing the goods he sells. (Chapters 1344 and 1403–1404)

Relationships

• Lily: Lily is Chen's sister, wartime responsibility, and later business partner. Their shared judgment lets them communicate and reject unsafe deals without prolonged argument.
• Blane: Blane is Chen's fellow soldier and partner in the suicidal diversion, recovery, and search for their caravan.
• Lex Williams: Lex rescues Chen, heals his infection, and gives him access to the Inn, enabling the transition from survivor to cultivator and merchant.
