Bedford

Bedford is a Celestial Immortal of the Artica race whose elders confine him in the Azure Baptism Palace to strengthen a body and spirit considered weak by his people's standards. Mentally youthful but extraordinarily accomplished, he becomes Lex's first direct source on Dao Hearts and the transition toward Dao Lord cultivation. (Chapters 1454–1459)

Biography

Conversation inside the Baptism Palace

Bedford welcomes Lex's group partly because enforced training has left him lonely and eager for company. He complains that the program is pointless because he discovered a nascent Dao as a mortal, yet readily discusses Dao Hearts, Artica culture, and the Expo. His openness begins as entertainment and an attempt to read the visitors' motives, but their lack of greed gradually convinces him they are worth befriending. (Chapters 1454–1458)

When Lex asks for practical guidance, Bedford admits that no fixed method can manufacture a Dao Heart and offers only broad experience and eventual Celestial advancement. He then shares an impression of his own inner state after Lex lowers his mental guard. Although Bedford misreads Lex's reaction, the exchange gives Lex a meaningful clue about sealed memories, while Bedford gains a rare friendly encounter that interrupts his monotonous confinement. Appearance and personality

Bedford resembles a featherless bird with two large wings and a long tail covered in blue metallic scales. He hovers naturally and speaks telepathically with the excited manner of a teenager. Sociable, boastful, curious, and fond of fun, he treats his own genius casually but is perceptive enough to test possible manipulation and gracious enough to reward sincere companionship. Abilities and cultivation

Bedford is a Celestial Immortal and Dao Seed who discovered his nascent Dao as a mortal. His voice is so dangerous that he normally communicates through spirit sense; he claims an insult once caused a stronger being's cultivation deviation and death. He can expose another mind to an impression of his Dao Heart, but cannot give a reproducible method for developing one. His comparatively weak body and spirit remain serious enough that Artica elders force prolonged azure-field conditioning. (Chapters 1455–1459)

• Lex Williams: Bedford tests Lex's intentions, shares rare Dao guidance, and comes to regard the unusual visitor as a possible friend. (Chapters 1455–1459)
