Bastet

Bastet is a black-cat Deity, Ra's daughter, and the Midnight Inn's first guest. Imprisoned on spirit-barren Earth and promised into a marriage she rejects, she uses the Inn's energy to recover enough strength to leave, inadvertently beginning the Inn's connection to the universe's highest powers.

Biography

Escape through the Midnight Inn

Bastet protects an Egyptian village while trapped in Earth's dead zone, where insufficient spiritual energy prevents her from recovering the power needed to depart. A Golden Key attracts her with pure energy, and she immediately brings her butler Falak and belongings through the door. She rents rooms without complaint and remains secluded until an Inn upgrade releases a higher energy that restores her ability to travel. Rather than stay where Ra can recover her, she leaves Earth, having made the Inn's first transaction and enabled Lex's first major quest reward. (Chapters 5–6, 36–38, 44, 90, and 159–188)

Resistance to her family

Later revelations explain that Bastet's flight is also resistance to Ra, who sold her into an unwanted marriage and searches for her after she sabotages his plans. Before escaping Earth she visits Lex's family and recognizes Ra's future influence around Moon. Too depleted to intervene directly, Bastet places a charm intended to keep her relatives from focusing on the child and asks for nothing in return. The protection may explain Sekhmet's limited interest in Moon, but the narrative leaves that connection plausible rather than proven. (Chapters 349, 405–415, and 1984–1985)

Bastet's freedom does not last uncontested. She and Falak are later escorted into a jail cell by a captor strong enough to overpower beings near the Origin realm's natural limit. No escape or release is shown afterward. Lex continues to remember her as friendlier than Ra and Sekhmet and as the guest whose presence helped him acquire Regal Embrace, leaving her latest condition unresolved imprisonment rather than confirmed death or alliance with her family. Appearance and personality

Bastet normally appears as a small black female cat and travels seated on Falak's back in a litter. That unthreatening form conceals enough power for an emotional lapse to cause an earthquake. She is curious, reserved, and accustomed to formal service, but not needlessly destructive: she immediately saves her worshippers after the quake and tolerates the early Inn's simplicity. Her quiet aid to Moon and defiance of Ra show compassion and independence alongside understandable caution. (Chapters 5–6, 37, 349, and 1984–1985)

Powers and limitations

Deity and Demi-Dao Lord power

Bastet is a Deity at the Demi-Dao Lord level who has touched upon the Dao. Even while weakened, her excitement can shake the land, she can protect an entire village across generations, dominate every living being on a planet through coercion, and travel between worlds once sufficiently restored. The exact Dao, combat techniques, and source of her divinity are not supplied. Henali rules constrain her actions, and stronger captors can imprison her despite her standing near the natural peak allowed by the Origin realm. (Chapters 5–6, 44, 349, 392, 667, and 1901)

Energy dependence and protective charm

Earth's dead zone starves Bastet of the energy needed for independent travel, making imprisonment environmental rather than a conventional physical cell. Dense Inn energy restores her rapidly, while a higher-energy surge gives her enough strength to leave. She can also place a subtle charm that diverts attention from Moon, but she admits her depleted state prevents stronger aid. Relationships

• Ra: Ra is Bastet's father and attempts to force her into marriage. She escapes him and deliberately disrupts his plans.
