Seamus

Seamus is an Ascended academy Bard whose planned folk-music career is abruptly redirected into battlefield support on the Hill Giant front.

Biography

Turning stage training into battlefield support

Seamus joins Karl’s mission team in academy uniform, visibly terrified and candid that until that week he expected to tour with a folk band rather than fight. He nevertheless understands the essential Bard combat spells and proposes staying near the battle line so his broad-area music can reach the formation. Karl accepts that support role and explicitly does not require Seamus to test his claimed dagger skill against Giants. (Chapter 332)

His first battlefield use of Inspiration succeeds well enough that the students remain buoyed after the fighting. Karl praises the result but urges him to prepare song choices instead of improvising under pressure. Seamus responds with humour, playing the opening of a familiar joke song, which shows that fear does not prevent him from reading and influencing the group’s mood. (Chapter 337)

Learning to perform inside the danger zone

As the formation advances, Seamus positions himself in the widened gap between warriors and mages, where both sides can see and hear him, and sustains Inspiration on his lute. This is a tactical adaptation of performance: visibility and audibility determine who benefits, so his placement matters as much as the song. His music supports the spearhead while leaving the direct fighting to the combat specialists. (Chapter 343)

Later, still afraid, he rides on Thor’s back beside Tessa and switches to a small pan flute that can be played one-handed while he carries a shield. Moving forward with the charge places him well beyond the safety he originally expected, and Karl recognizes the act as bravery precisely because the fear remains. No later rank or advanced Bard spell is confirmed. (Chapter 356)

Appearance and personality

Seamus has long auburn hair worn in a braid and initially wears an academy uniform with a silver Ascended badge. He carries a small lute or mandolin and later a pan flute and shield. He is openly fearful, self-deprecating, and quick to laugh, but not cowardly: he continues playing, improves his positioning, and rides into danger when the team needs his support. (Chapters 332, 337, 356)

Abilities and class

Seamus’s Bard repertoire includes Inspiration, which increases attack speed and luck across a considerable area; Courage, intended to counter fear; and Mesmerizing Chant, which distracts enemies. The songs require enough concentration to perform and depend on reaching allies or targets through music, making noise, position, fear, and interruption practical limits. Only Inspiration is directly shown in sustained battlefield use. (Chapters 332, 337, 343)

He claims to be superb with a dagger but is not shown using it against an enemy. His instruments change application rather than the underlying magic: the lute supports a visible central performance, while the pan flute leaves one hand free for a shield during mounted movement. At his latest appearance he remains Ascended, with better field composure but no confirmed class evolution. (Chapters 332, 343, 356)

Relationships

Karl assigns Seamus a support role, coaches his song preparation, and recognizes his courage. Tessa and Thor protect and transport him during the forward charge, letting him contribute without pretending he is a front-line duelist. His music supports Dana, Lotus, and the wider student formation. (Chapters 332–356)
