Jared

Jared, usually called Old Jared, is a one-eyed sailor who makes a monthly run between Drodh and Lared. He spends much of his pay at the Laughing Dragon tavern, but when a hostile fleet threatens the city he exchanges the bar stool for militia equipment and reports to the docks.

Biography

A tavern regular answers a real coastal threat

Jared's ordinary cycle is well known in Drodh: he sails to Lared, returns within a week, visits the dungeon, then drinks away his earnings while unsuccessfully courting Beth. His drunken laughter and a daytime fight make him look unreliable, but his work still connects the two cities and keeps him familiar with the port's dangers. When Tessa heals his bruises and lingering cough, he responds with hospitality rather than suspicion, ordering drinks for Karl's party and treating them as friends. (Chapters 737–747)

The incoming fleet reveals why the city continues to count him among its sailors. Jared gears up and waits at the docks with the defenders even though his regular tab gives him a financial reason to want the militia bonus. The Laughing Dragon's replacement barmaid says he can handle himself and asks only that Karl keep him alive. His latest action therefore connects the disreputable tavern life to a real civic role: he is an aging, imperfect sailor who still reports when Drodh may be attacked. (Chapter 756)

Appearance and personality

Jared is an old, one-eyed male sailor. After a daytime brawl he has visible bruises and cuts and looks worse for wear until Tessa heals him. No species, hair color, height, or exact clothing is established. (Chapters 738 and 747)

He is habitually drunk, loud, flirtatious, and easily amused, but also sociable and loyal to the port. His tab and interest in Beth make him a local joke; his decision to arm himself for the docks shows that the joke does not exhaust his character. (Chapters 737–756)

Abilities and class

Jared's class and rank are not stated. He is an experienced sailor who completes a regular intercity run, visits the dungeon, and is considered capable in a fight, but the corpus names no navigation, combat, or maritime skill. (Chapters 737 and 756)

His missing eye creates an obvious blind side, and his age, drinking, cough, and recent injuries show ordinary physical limits. Tessa can remove the cough and visible wounds with healing magic, but no later scene demonstrates Jared's performance in the fleet defense or a rank progression. (Chapters 747 and 756)

Relationships

  • Beth: Jared drinks at Beth's workplace and hopes for her attention, though she considers him much too old. Their relationship is familiar but not reciprocal romance. (Chapters 737–739)
  • Tessa: Tessa heals Jared after a brawl, removing both the fresh injuries and his lingering cough. (Chapter 747)
  • Karl: Jared welcomes Karl's group at the tavern, while Karl later considers standing on his blind side during the dock defense. (Chapters 738–756)

Items

Jared has no scoped catalog item. He is described as geared for the docks, but the corpus does not name his weapon, armor, ship, or personal sailing equipment. (Chapter 756)
