Shuten-doji
Shuten-doji is the strongest oni of Oe Mountain, a nearly thousand-year-old great youkai who joins Theodore's war for the promise of battle and later anchors the East Continent's new political balance.
Biography
Prometheus and the Eastern Apocalypse
Shuten-doji meets Theodore Miller as the strongest individual among Oe Mountain's youkai. He has waited for a rematch with Abe no Seimei since surviving a Heavenly Sword wound, and reacts with fury on learning that Seimei died without fulfilling the promise. Theodore wins his cooperation by offering powerful enemies, while the broader youkai follow a pledged offer of freedom. Shuten-doji then leads the northern force through Lust's variants, treating the campaign as the worthy battle denied to him during a millennium of confinement. (Chapters 361–364 and 370–373)
Against the heavenly demon, Shuten-doji holds a close position in Theodore's formation and uses his club to create openings for the sword masters and dragons. The demon wounds him severely, but he survives the final battle. Theodore's later return of the youkai to a free territory fulfills the bargain without making Shuten-doji a summoned servant or controlled familiar. (Chapters 373–374 and 379)
Marriage, Armageddon, and the New World
After Armageddon, Theodore uses the youkai led by Shuten-doji as the military partner of the surviving central population. Their strength deters neighboring states and helps the New Central Kingdom retain much of its territory. Shuten-doji's direct decisions in the negotiations are not shown, but the arrangement confirms that he remains an independent leader rather than reverting to Oe Mountain imprisonment. (Chapter 398)
Appearance and personality
Shuten-doji is a giant oni with purple skin, an ugly face, leather clothing fastened by metal, and a massive scar crossing his torso from Seimei's Heavenly Sword. He is loud, violent, cunning enough to judge strength, and happiest in battle. His anger at Seimei's broken promise also hints at wounded attachment beneath his boastful hostility. (Chapters 361–362)
Magic, abilities, and martial skills
Shuten-doji possesses a body of extraordinary durability and strength. He survived the Heavenly Sword cutting into his torso, can shake a mountain with his roar, and swings a club hard enough to threaten the heavenly demon. He is strongest among the three leading Oe Mountain youkai in a one-on-one fight, although the other two together may defeat him. The source does not name a formal energy system or explain his body's material. (Chapters 361–364 and 373–374)
His experience lets him use that strength tactically, feinting or creating openings for allied strikes rather than only charging. Even so, the heavenly demon catches his club and inflicts critical wounds once Theodore's supporting formation weakens, establishing a limit against transcendence-level combat. (Chapter 374)
Relationships
- Theodore Miller: Theodore gains Shuten-doji's cooperation by offering battle and freedom rather than magical domination, then uses his strength in the heavenly-demon formation and postwar alliance. (Chapters 361–374 and 398)

- Nobutsuna and Randolph Clovis: Shuten-doji fights beside the two sword masters in Theodore's close formation, using his club to force openings against the heavenly demon. (Chapters 373–374)
Items
Shuten-doji wields a massive club suited to his physical strength. It has no established unique name or independent supernatural property and therefore is not a generated item link. (Chapters 361–374)
