Nobutsuna

Nobutsuna is Japan's century-old Sword Saint, a disciplined master who helps Theodore Miller reclaim Seimei's legacy and fight the heavenly demon before representing Japan in the eastern recovery.

Biography

Prometheus and the Eastern Apocalypse

Nobutsuna initially treats Theodore with extreme caution because a clash between them could devastate Japan. When his grandson Magoshiro attacks over the Heavenly Sword, Nobutsuna limits the damage, accepts the result, and promises Abe no Seimei stricter instruction rather than defending the younger man's pride. He then joins the forces responding to Lust's catastrophe, leads Japan's southern unit through the occupied territory, and accepts Theodore's coordinated plan despite preferring a direct duel. (Chapters 360–363 and 370–373)

Against the heavenly demon, Nobutsuna fights in the close formation with Randolph Clovis and Shuten-doji. He completes One Blade Single Water Moon under the formation's support and chooses one precise instant where Randolph favors a field of cuts, but the demon overwhelms both masters and breaks their swords. Nobutsuna survives, later speaks for Japan in negotiations, and agrees to receive refugees and administer part of the former empire without excessive territorial greed. (Chapters 371–379)

Appearance and personality

Nobutsuna is an elderly Japanese swordsman more than a century old, carrying himself with enough control that wealth and ordinary political power cannot compel him. He is stern, proud of personal combat, and burdened by Magoshiro's temperament, yet practical enough to submit to a stronger protector when Japan's survival is at stake and to accept collective strategy against an impossible enemy. (Chapters 360–361 and 371–377)

Magic, abilities, and martial skills

Nobutsuna is a sword master whose speed can keep pace with Randolph's Acceleration-assisted attack. His New Life Born, New Cloud Flow style includes Shooting Star and the secret technique One Blade Single Water Moon. The latter concentrates on a single perfectly timed cut rather than broad coverage; formation power helps him complete it, so the battle does not establish that he could reproduce the same output unaided. (Chapters 363 and 371–374)

His perception lets him partially intercept the Heavenly Sword's strike against Magoshiro, limiting a lethal cut to the loss of an arm. Even so, he is not comparable to Theodore as a transcendent, and the heavenly demon seriously injures him and breaks his weapon. The corpus does not name a personal Aura Ability separate from his sword school. (Chapters 361 and 374)

Relationships

• Theodore Miller: Nobutsuna first views Theodore as a dangerous claimant to Japan's relics, then follows his war plan and addresses him as savior after the eastern catastrophe. (Chapters 360–377)
• Randolph Clovis: Nobutsuna and Randolph fight side by side against the heavenly demon, using different judgments about how to reach the same overwhelmingly fast opponent. (Chapters 373–374)
• Suzuka: Nobutsuna and Suzuka serve as Japan's military and spiritual representatives. He takes the lead in postwar political commitments because she lacks comparable political experience. (Chapters 360–361 and 377–379)
• Magoshiro: Nobutsuna is Magoshiro's grandfather and teacher. He tries to restrain the younger swordsman's pride and accepts responsibility for correcting him after Theodore severs his arm. (Chapter 361)

Items

• Heavenly Sword: Nobutsuna helps guard the shrine where the divine sword awaits its qualified master, but Theodore becomes that master. Nobutsuna's custodial relationship does not make the sword his personal weapon. (Chapters 359–361)
• Personal sword: Nobutsuna channels his school through an ordinary named-unknown blade, which the heavenly demon breaks. No independent supernatural property is established. (Chapter 374)
