Herman

Herman Alphen is a retired Red Tower elder whose war injuries leave him without either leg and reduce him from the seventh circle, but not from active service. He commands the magical convoy carrying Ellenoa toward Mana-vil and is killed when Superbia ambushes its leading formation.

Biography

Academy, Magic Contest, and National Service

Herman is first identified as the only veteran war magician still available in the capital, although his injuries normally keep him from combat. When Meltor assembles Ellenoa's convoy, he returns as its commander, promises Vince Haidel that both Ellenoa and Theodore Miller will be protected, and chooses to move toward the approaching Veronica rather than wait in Bergen after learning that an unknown enemy killed Ellenoa's original guards. His leading Red Tower formation answers Superbia's ambush with concentrated fire, but the creature's regeneration and heat-resistant traits let it annihilate all eight war magicians within minutes. Herman's severed head is thrown before the remaining convoy; his death forces the surviving escorts to flee with Ellenoa and is mourned by both Veronica and Vince. Appearance and personality

Herman is an elderly man with white hair who travels in a wheelchair; both trouser legs hang empty because he lost his legs more than a decade earlier. He is blunt, energetic, and practical, dismissing prolonged noble courtesies and exchanging familiar insults with his longtime White Tower counterpart Shugel. That rough manner coexists with care for junior magicians and calm judgment under threat. (Chapters 71–72 and 80)

Magic, abilities, and martial skills

Herman was once a seventh-circle magician. Although a war injury cost him one circle, his remaining power is described as exceeding an ordinary sixth-circle magician and later as equivalent to the seventh circle. He leads Red Tower formation magic and contributes to a Heat Wave Chain whose fire pillars tear clouds apart and make the battlefield as hot as lava. The attack badly damages Superbia but cannot overcome its near-immortality and adaptive defenses. (Chapters 71, 73–74, and 76–77)

• Vince Haidel: Herman greets Vince warmly as a fellow Red Tower veteran, respects his decision to remain behind, and accepts responsibility for protecting Vince's disciple. (Chapters 71–72)
