Shugel
Shugel is a veteran White Tower elder and one of Meltor's rare long-distance space magicians, trusted with investigations, royal transport, and high-risk battlefield insertion.
Biography
Academy, Magic Contest, and National Service
Shugel travels to the Miller Barony as an examiner after the elder lich incident, questions Theodore Miller without presuming guilt, and accepts an explanation that matches the surviving evidence. He then conveys the king's summons and uses Mass Teleport to return Theodore and Sylvia to Mana-vil. His role continues as Meltor's strategic transporter during later missions, and his long familiarity with other tower veterans shows him as an established institutional elder rather than a field newcomer. (Chapters 52–54 and 61–73)
Elvenheim, Kargas, and the Pirate Archipelago
While studying space magic, Theodore uses Shugel's long-distance movement as the standard he cannot yet match. Shugel has no direct scene or new decision in this arc; the reference instead confirms the exceptional calculation and practice required to reach his level. His writings, if any, and the route by which he learned the specialization remain unknown. (Chapter 139)
East Continent and the Northern War
Shugel supports the northern war from Meltor by executing an extremely dangerous insertion that lets Randolph enter the anti-magic airspace around Rutben and rescue Orta. Later, Blundell directs Sylvia to use Shugel's transport because the elder is still at the White Tower and owes him a favor. These scenes confirm continuing service and precision under risk, but do not place Shugel personally on the battlefield. (Chapter 265)
Appearance and personality
Shugel is an elderly man with white hair and beard, white robes, taut skin, and unusually bright, energetic eyes. He enjoys jokes, answers younger magicians' questions patiently, and treats examinations seriously without becoming punitive. His frequent arguments with Herman are a half-century routine between colleagues rather than genuine enmity. (Chapters 52–54 and 71–73)
Magic, abilities, and martial skills
Shugel is a Prime-ranked wind magician who specializes in space magic. Mass Teleport bends space to carry several people over great distances, requires a prepared circle and clear receiving area, and can produce severe sensory disorientation. He warns passengers to follow precise breathing and positioning instructions because overlap with matter or an unsuitable destination can be fatal. (Chapters 52–53)
His later battlefield insertion bypasses defenses that interfere with normal flight and teleportation, but the operation is described as dangerous enough that a mistake would kill the passenger. The exact spell design is not named, and the feat should not be treated as routine or risk-free. (Chapter 265)
Relationships
- Theodore Miller: Shugel examines Theodore after the lich crisis, transports him for royal service, and becomes an early benchmark for the younger magician's space studies. (Chapters 52–54, 61–73, and 139)
- Sylvia Adruncus: Sylvia calls Shugel “Grandfather” and trusts his transport, but Blundell is her established biological grandfather. The title reflects closeness and seniority; the corpus does not establish Shugel as another blood relative. (Chapters 52–53 and 265)
- Orta: Shugel's insertion enables Randolph to interrupt Fermut's trap and save Orta. Their direct personal relationship is not otherwise developed. (Chapter 265)
Items
Shugel uses a staff while casting Mass Teleport, but the weapon or focus has no given name or independent property. He has no named personal item in the supplied link manifest. (Chapter 53)
