Giovanni

Marcus Giovanni is a magician who loses to Sylvia Adruncus at the Mana-vil Magic Contest and is later corrupted into an elder lich by the grimoire Death's Worship. Giovanni is the grimoire's host, not the soul inside it: Death's Worship contains Jerem, who uses hosts in pursuit of his own resurrection.

Biography

Academy, Magic Contest, and National Service

Giovanni first appears as Sylvia's tournament opponent and is defeated in twenty-four seconds. Later evidence identifies him as a newly advanced fifth-circle magician whose jealousy of Sylvia leaves him vulnerable to Death's Worship. Within two months, the grimoire transforms him into a sixth-circle elder lich and builds an undead dungeon beneath the Miller estate. Giovanni separates his soul into a protected Giovanni's Life Vessel, gaining limited immortality while his skeletal body fights Sylvia and Randolph Clovis. Forced into the dungeon's core, Theodore Miller discovers that Gluttony can consume the vessel even though ordinary attacks cannot damage it. Once the soul in the vessel is eaten, Giovanni's lich body turns to ash. Death's Worship survives separately and attempts to take Theodore as a new host, confirming that the dead Giovanni and Jerem's grimoire-bound soul are distinct entities. (Chapters 30 and 49–52)

Appearance and personality

The supplied evidence gives little detail about Giovanni's living appearance. As an elder lich he has a skeletal body animated by black magic. His jealousy of Sylvia is stated retrospectively, while his lich form is confident and cruel, threatening to kill and reanimate his opponents; the corpus does not clarify how much of that conduct comes from Giovanni versus the grimoire's corruption.
