Giovanni's Life Vessel

Giovanni's Life Vessel is the red crystal in which the elder lich Giovanni seals his soul. It serves both as the core of his dungeon and as the anchor of his limited immortality until Theodore Miller discovers that Gluttony can consume it.

History

Giovanni places the vessel at the center of his dungeon's Core Room. Its dense black magic power supports his control of the dungeon, including the space magic that he uses to isolate Theodore from Sylvia and Randolph. As long as the vessel survives, destroying Giovanni's skeletal body cannot permanently kill him. The tool's defenses negate attacks below the power of a sword master's aura or a seventh-Circle magician, leaving the fourth-Circle Theodore apparently unable to damage it. (Chapter 49)

Theodore remembers that Gluttony can eat incorporeal beings when they contain magic power or intelligence and tests the vessel with Appraisal. Gluttony identifies the crystal as a Treasure-rated magic tool containing Giovanni's corrupted soul and confirms that it is edible. Theodore orders it consumed rather than trying to overpower its conventional defenses. The loss of the soul anchor removes the basis of Giovanni's immortality, gives Theodore a large quantity of magic power and part of Giovanni's knowledge, and initiates a three-day digestion period. It also creates an unexplained hostile relationship, recorded by Appraisal only as an unknown party's interest. (Chapter 49)

Abilities and properties

  • Soul anchor: The vessel contains Giovanni's soul and grants him limited immortality while it remains intact. (Chapter 49)
  • Dungeon core: Installed as the heart of Giovanni's dungeon, it helps sustain his command of the space and his use of forced transfer. (Chapter 49)
  • Defensive contract: A negative-resource contract nullifies attacks below a high threshold and prevents spatial magic from targeting the seal. Its protection is selective rather than absolute: it does not stop an object—or Gluttony's tongue—from approaching it. (Chapter 49)
  • Stored power and knowledge: Consumption transfers a large store of magic power and some of Giovanni's knowledge and proficiency to Theodore through Gluttony. The corpus does not say that Theodore receives Giovanni's entire memory or complete skill set. (Chapter 49)
