Void Stepper

The Void Stepper is a pair of ancient green-and-gold battle boots able to cross ordinary distance, dimensional boundaries, and barriers in a single step. Its mobility is extreme enough that an uncontrolled first movement destroys an inhabited star and can also tear apart the wearer.

History

A catastrophic first step

Endric retrieves the Void Stepper and hands it to Gustav on the Trackiowar Star. The boots radiate enough attraction energy to disturb surrounding space. When Gustav puts them on and casually steps, their release destroys the entire star before he understands the controls. Information entering his mind reveals that the boots can walk on air, enter another galaxy or dimension, and cross virtually any destination or boundary. (Chapters 1362–1363)

The same disclosure explains the danger. A galactic step moves the wearer through space-time at a speed that protects the booted legs but can blast the rest of the body apart. Gustav removes them and postpones serious use until he can combine them with the Sacred Armor and develop finer balance. Their power is not malicious or fully autonomous in the text; the catastrophe results from his untrained activation. (Chapter 1363)

Controlled crossings

With greater control, Gustav uses the boots to pass an otherwise impenetrable repellant field around the exit-point planet. He then returns for Aildris, Endric, and Ria one by one, adjusting for the passenger's added weight because a large balance change could cause a fatal overshoot. This demonstrates both boundary traversal and the concentration required for safe transport. (Chapter 1439)

The Void Stepper becomes essential inside the Warp Demolator. Ordinary movement cannot overcome the phenomenon's currents, so Gustav steps through folded space-time to accelerate along its roots and choose the instructed left path. He later crosses thousands of light-years at a time while searching the Stagnant Siterus Void. By chapter 1643 the boots are connected with the other four sacred items in his restoration ritual. (Chapters 1534–1537, 1643)

Abilities and properties

  • Carries the wearer through air, distance, barriers, galaxies, and dimensional boundaries through a literal step. (Chapters 1363, 1439)
  • Can move passengers, but added weight changes the balance and increases the risk of overshooting or bodily destruction. (Chapter 1439)
  • Releases catastrophic force when uncontrolled; Gustav's first casual step destroys the Trackiowar Star. (Chapter 1363)
  • Protects the wearer's legs during travel but not the rest of the body, making vast jumps potentially fatal without sufficient durability or armor. (Chapter 1363)
  • Operates within the Warp Demolator, where it crosses currents that suppress ordinary motion. (Chapter 1534)

The “four acquired, three remaining” line in chapter 1363 conflicts with later chapters that explicitly enumerate five sacred items. Chapters 1527 and 1595 provide the controlling five-item count.
