Orlaeth

Orlaeth is the Sovereign whose intellect and mana become both the first target and the principal power source of Seris's open rebellion.

Biography

Recorded appearances

Orlaeth arrives to inspect a shielding machine that Seris Vritra claims to have built for him. His two heads analyze the mechanism independently, and he discovers both the obvious trap and the concealed acquisition system beneath the room. Seris nevertheless uses his attempt to dominate Caera Denoir and Cylrit to trigger the drain, then captures him alive. His body powers the shield over Sehz-Clar until Cecilia reaches the machine, overcomes the distributed mana, and cuts off his remaining head. Seris continues drawing from the preserved horn and head afterward, making Orlaeth's residual mana essential to the rebellion even though the Sovereign himself is dead. Appearance and personality

Orlaeth is a gaunt basilisk with two heads, separate sets of eyes, and mismatched antler-like horns. He is imperious, impatient, paranoid, and genuinely brilliant, able to identify subtle engineering sabotage while using empathic perception to pressure the people around him. Captivity leaves him wasted, expressionless, and eventually missing one head. (Chapters 401 and 433)

Relationships

• Seris Vritra: Orlaeth is Seris's Sovereign and intended master, but she turns his trust in her engineering into a trap. After capturing him, she uses his mana to sustain the rebellion's shield. (Chapters 401, 414, 418, 433, and 446–447)
• Caera Denoir and Cylrit: Seris uses their emotions to interfere with Orlaeth's empathic reading. He attempts to compel them against her, but their resistance helps complete the trap. (Chapter 401)
• Cecilia: Cecilia traces Orlaeth's distributed mana through the shield, contests his control near the source, and decapitates him when Seris breaks his body free of the machine. (Chapter 433)

Mana, aether, and abilities

Orlaeth is a powerful Vritra mana user with empathic perception and compulsion strong enough to surface emotions and push lesser mages toward obedience. He retains fine control while his mana is distributed across hundreds of miles of shielding and possesses exceptional knowledge of arrays, batteries, and mana acquisition. He shows no personal aether art. (Chapters 401, 418, and 433)

Items

• Sehz-Clar shielding array: Orlaeth ordered and helped design the shielding system, but Seris modifies it into a trap and later uses his body as its mana source. The array is infrastructure, not a weapon he carries. (Chapters 401, 418, and 433)
• Preserved horn and head: After Orlaeth's death, Seris stores the remains in a mana-conductive solution and continues extracting mana for the rebellion's defenses. They are remains and fuel, not a living continuation of Orlaeth. (Chapters 446–447)
