Kalon expects to lead a controlled qualification, sets the party's formations, and accepts administrative responsibility for Ezra, Ada, and the other candidates. Grey and Haedrig's concealed strength complicates that command structure, but Kalon continues trying to coordinate a group whose confidence fractures after the first deaths. In the convergence and mirror zones he fights with a spear, holds the survivors together, and shifts from professional assurance toward increasingly sacrificial family protection. Mythelias and the mirror phantoms exploit grief faster than leadership can contain it. Kalon and most of the party die, leaving Ada Granbehl alive but traumatized and proving that experience cannot make an emotionally manipulated ascent controlled. (Chapters 298–300, 302, and 304–309)
