Cynthia Goodsky — The Beginning After the End

Cynthia Goodsky is the elderly director who reshapes Xyrus Academy into an institution open to every Dicathian race while covertly preparing its students for a threat she cannot freely explain. She mentors Tessia Eralith, recruits Arthur Leywin, and works with her wyvern bond Avier, but a binding imposed by her former homeland constrains what she can disclose even to allies.

Biography

Role in the story

Cynthia meets Arthur while treating Tessia after the elderwood guardian beast will destabilizes her mana. As director, she wants Xyrus to produce capable mages whose loyalties extend beyond the continent's old racial divisions, so she admits students of all three races, makes Tessia her personal disciple, recruits Arthur to teach and serve on the Disciplinary Committee, and quietly assesses both students as people likely to matter in the coming conflict. Her authority lets her protect and train them, but it also makes the academy a focus for nobles who resent reform and for observers connected to the enemy she anticipates. (Chapters 20–21, 45, 48, 54–55, and 74–76)

After Arthur brings her Alea's adamantium identification tag, Cynthia presents it to the Council while concealing Arthur's role in finding the fallen Lance. She lies because she believes interrogation would expose a child to political forces he is not ready to face, then follows the Council's investigation while Merial entrusts her with news about Tessia. Cynthia's private conduct reveals why her caution is so practiced: she and Avier identify and kill infiltrators from her homeland, and she reflects that years in Dicathen have replaced her former indifference with a commitment to the people around her. The old wound caused by a corrupted mana beast and the spies' presence connect her academy work to a longer, hidden struggle. (Chapters 74–75, 79, and 82)

The Xyrus assault destroys Cynthia's public position even though she had been trying to prepare the continent against precisely such an infiltration. Imprisoned and stripped of her title, she recognizes that Lucas's unnatural enhancement could not have come from a known Dicathian elixir, but she cannot tell Arthur what she knows about its source. She explains that even thinking about forbidden disclosure activates a curse-like binding she has spent decades trying and failing to remove. Political leaders then make her a scapegoat for the attack and sentence her to public execution, turning her long effort to defend Dicathen into the evidence used against her. (Chapters 102–103)

Appearance and personality

Cynthia is an elderly woman whose age does little to soften her imposing presence. She carries herself with measured authority, studies exceptional students closely, and can move from dry humor to strict command without losing control of a room. An old injury associated with corrupted mana beasts remains visible evidence of dangers she cannot discuss openly. Her guarded habits sometimes appear evasive, but her private choices show patience, protectiveness, and a willingness to accept personal risk when revealing the whole truth would endanger others or trigger her binding. Relationships

Tessia Eralith: Cynthia accepts Tessia as her personal disciple, helps develop her plant magic, and monitors the unstable elderwood guardian will within her. Tessia's condition also draws Cynthia into a trusted exchange with Merial and sharpens her concern about corrupted mana beasts. (Chapters 20, 45, 50, 58, and 75–76)
Arthur Leywin: Cynthia quickly recognizes Arthur's unusual ability and gives him responsibilities at Xyrus that exceed those of an ordinary student. She protects him from the Council's interrogation after Alea's death and later shares what little she can from prison, but the binding prevents the complete explanation he seeks. Avier: Avier is Cynthia's living wyvern bond, adviser, and covert partner. He challenges her assumptions, helps identify infiltrators, and assists when she kills them. Their bond is a relationship between characters, not ownership of an item. (Chapters 54–55, 64, and 82)
Merial Eralith: Merial trusts Cynthia as Tessia's teacher and privately asks her for immediate news about her daughter's condition, giving Cynthia a sound-transmission scroll so the Council's work need not separate her from that maternal responsibility. (Chapter 79)

Mana, aether, and abilities

Cynthia is a silver-core wind mage whose demonstrated combat magic favors precision, concealment, and control. She forms a wind cutter capable of killing an infiltrator cleanly and uses a sound barrier to isolate a confrontation. Her sound deviance can also direct destructive vibration inside a target, allowing her to kill without the broad collateral damage that an academy setting would make especially dangerous. These techniques are powered through mana; the corpus does not establish any aether art belonging to her. (Chapter 82)

Her most consequential capabilities are institutional and covert. Cynthia evaluates young mages, organizes the Disciplinary Committee, coordinates academy defenses, manages information before the Council, and recognizes evidence of foreign magical intervention. Avier contributes independent observation rather than functioning as a tool or spell. Her principal limitation is the homeland binding: it inflicts pain or otherwise activates when she approaches forbidden disclosure, and decades of effort have not removed it. The restriction explains silence but does not erase her agency; she works indirectly, protects selected people, and kills active spies within the space the binding leaves her. Alea's adamantium identification tag: Arthur gives Cynthia the fallen Lance's tag as evidence. She takes it into Council custody and presents it during the investigation, using the object to warn the rulers while withholding Arthur's identity from them.
