Sarah
Biography
Academy associate and early ally
Sarah first appears as a serious Advanced Caterpillar Class student who challenges Shang's placement because his body exceeds the grade's normal standard. Her frustration is tied to her own pressure to prove herself as one of the class's few women and to earn matches against its strongest students. When Shang bypasses her weapon-countering style with unarmed grappling, she defends the educational value of his tactics, admits the flaw in her experience, and proposes an exchange: he will teach her to fight beasts, while she shares her knowledge of politics, materials, and weapons. (Chapters 99 and 103–106)
By the General Stage, Sarah has overtaken Astor and leads a three-person Hunting Guild team in the Caves. She declines the academy's General Stage grade because it would demand exclusive focus on advancement; instead, she studies smithing so that she can eventually create weapons for herself and other high-level warriors. Her leadership is strict and survival-oriented: she assigns roles, ends a profitable hunt before greed draws the team deeper, destroys Elver's recklessly acquired evidence, and orders an immediate retreat when Shang detects a stronger threat. The later Poison Adept attack leaves her alive but unwillingly bound to secrecy by Soran's indefinite Magic Contract. (Chapters 251–262)
A career shaped by the warrior institutions
The later corpus does not directly show Sarah's work, advancement, or fate. More than twenty years after their academy days, Shang realizes that he has not sought her out and can only speculate that she may have begun learning to smith; he expects that she would greet him with the same formal coldness that now separates him from Astor. Subsequent references remember Sarah only as part of the old Caves team. The documented consequence is therefore distance rather than a confirmed career outcome: her institutional path continues outside Shang's view, and no later personal action or formal advancement is established for this Sarah. (Chapters 432–433, 497, and 550)
Appearance and personality
Sarah is tall and muscular, with naturally grey hair, and carries a massive war hammer while wearing protective gauntlets. She rarely smiles and speaks in a flat, exacting manner. Her competitiveness and skepticism can seem cold, but they are paired with discipline, intellectual honesty, and a strong sense of responsibility: she openly acknowledges weaknesses in her style, honors the terms of her knowledge exchange, and refuses to let a teammate's financial desperation normalize needless danger. (Chapters 98, 103–106, 251, and 255)
Abilities and progression
Sarah has a Metal Affinity and develops a fighting style designed to counter armed humans. Her hammer supplies long reach and crushing force, while her gauntleted left hand threatens metal weapons strongly enough that Shang must repeatedly abort sword attacks. The defense is not absolute: protective runes common on General Stage weapons greatly weaken Metal-Affinity interference, and an unarmed opponent or beast can bypass the premise of her style. Training with Shang teaches her to use the hammer more defensively to maintain distance, but a single grappling entry can still end the exchange. (Chapters 104–106 and 116)
As a General Stage hunter, Sarah fills the demanding Flex position. She can cripple armored prey with blunt strikes, shift between drawing attention and dealing damage, and cover whichever role the Runner or Buster cannot perform; this versatility lets a three-person team function like a larger one. Her metal and weapon expertise also supports her blacksmithing ambition, although the corpus documents neither a finished high-level creation nor a later formal breakthrough. (Chapters 252 and 254)
Relationships
- Shang: Sarah initially distrusts Shang's placement and resents his rapid gains, yet accepts his skill after their spar and trades technical knowledge for beast-fighting practice. Their connection fades when he repeatedly disappears, and their later relationship is known only through his memories and speculation. (Chapters 99, 104–107, 147, 251–252, and 432–433)
- Elver: Elver is Sarah's Runner and subordinate. She values his survival over a small reward, but her destruction of the evidence he risked his life to obtain makes him feel that she has demeaned both the risk and their friendship. (Chapter 255)
- Astor: Astor serves as Sarah's Buster and helps maintain team cohesion. Sarah eventually surpasses him in power while simultaneously pursuing smithing, and he trusts her leadership even when her severity causes conflict. (Chapters 251–255)
