Astor
Biography
Combat instructor at Warrior's Paradise
Astor first meets Shang as the strongest student in the Advanced Caterpillar Class. Unlike Elver, he withholds judgment about the unusually young newcomer and immediately recognizes both Shang's weak human-combat experience and his underlying danger. Their supervised matches turn Astor into a practical instructor: his control of momentum, feints, and vital-point defense defeats Shang despite a weaker body, while his restraint saves Shang's inferior weapon from being destroyed. The encounter gives Shang a concrete standard for technique and Battle-Strength rather than raw physical power. (Chapters 98–103)
After Shang's long absence, Astor welcomes him back without resentment and invites him to guard Astor's hunting team in the Caves. Astor works as the team's Buster beside Sarah and Elver, using his greatsword to break armored prey and his Water Affinity to support scouting. When a Poison Adept attacks, Astor shields his companions with water; afterward, he is willing to keep Shang's secret without payment until learning that the academy, rather than Shang, will fund the contract. The hunt confirms a genuine if short-lived friendship and leaves the team bound by Soran's Magic Contract. (Chapters 250–260)
A veteran in the transformed academy
Astor's influence persists after his active academy years: Shang continues using a heavy-weapon acceleration move learned by watching him. Roughly thirty years after their student days, Astor has reached the Early Commander Stage and teaches at Warrior's Paradise. When Shang calls them friends, Astor answers with formal respect and returns to his class, reflecting how decades of absence and their enormous status gap have reduced the relationship to an old acquaintance. He nevertheless remains a knowledgeable, respected teacher, later escorting a nervous student to an important meeting. (Chapters 322, 432–433, and 472)
Appearance and personality
As a young warrior, Astor is tall and broad, with short blue hair and a gigantic, wide sword. His weapon and manner combine ferocity with restraint: he enjoys serious combat and can project intense killing intent, yet he stops a decisive strike when it would needlessly destroy Shang's sword. He is observant, good-humored with companions, and later described by a student as friendly, helpful, forthcoming, and an excellent teacher. (Chapters 98, 101–102, and 472)
Abilities and progression
Astor builds his early fighting style around an exceptionally heavy greatsword made from materials above his own stage. He commits his body's power to a swing, lets the weapon's mass pull him forward at speeds beyond his normal movement, and redirects the remaining momentum into subsequent attacks. The method supplies power, reach, defense, and weapon-breaking force, but it needs room and preparation, consumes substantial stamina, and leaves limited flexibility; obstacles, repeated disengagements, or pressure that denies momentum can counter it. (Chapters 101–103 and 106)
His Water Affinity adds quiet repositioning and team utility. In a spar, a small surge beneath his feet moves him just far enough to exploit an opponent's imbalance; during hunts, dispersed water helps him locate prey, and a full barrier converts an incoming fire wave into survivable steam. By his latest direct encounter with Shang he is an Early Commander Stage warrior of roughly average Battle-Strength, now applying his experience as an academy teacher rather than pursuing a documented further breakthrough. (Chapters 103, 254, 258, and 433)
Relationships
- Shang: Astor begins as Shang's superior classmate and most useful early sparring benchmark. He later treats Shang as a friend during the Caves expedition, but decades without contact and Shang's rise to Count make their final meeting formal and distant. (Chapters 101–103, 250–260, and 433)
- Sarah and Elver: Astor hunts with both as part of Sarah's three-person team. He mediates their argument, protects them during the Poison Adept's attack, and supplies the Buster role around their more flexible and mobile specialties. (Chapters 251–258)
- Mattheo: Mattheo is Astor's regular sparring partner and the one classmate able to keep him under sustained pressure. Astor responds competitively but generously, praising Mattheo's improvement after their exchange. (Chapter 103)
