Wysten Karrey

Wysten Karrey is the strongest King-stage member and one of the leaders of Skyfall's secret Shadow Unit. A veteran assassin nearing the end of his natural lifespan, he helps the unit accept Evane's authority, survives its humiliating test against Nux, and later commands missions for the reorganized Shadow Legion.

Biography

From royal operative to humbled veteran

Wysten first steps forward when another Shadow Unit leader challenges Evane during her purge of palace spies. Knowing that years of dangerous missions have made his comrade aggressive, Wysten apologizes, accepts responsibility, and uses the opening to keep the confrontation from becoming a fight. Evane's knowledge of his supposedly confidential identity alarms him, but he responds by enforcing her order and silencing further objections. His choice establishes him as the unit's moderating senior at the moment its command passes from the old royal structure to the incoming queen. (Chapter 524)

While reporting to Astaria, Wysten tries to understand how Nux turned captured spies and recognizes that the Leander group is far outside ordinary expectations. Astaria then uses the Shadow Unit to test Nux. After he incapacitates most of the unit unseen, Wysten abandons pride, tends the unconscious King-stage members, acknowledges that he underestimated “Lord Nux,” and gathers all six leaders for a coordinated last stand. Their combined formation wounds Wysten with an allied arrow after Nux changes position, and Nux knocks him unconscious after a short greatsword exchange. Wysten awakens with the other defeated leaders and returns when Evane summons the unit; shame remains, but Astaria redirects it toward training rather than paralysis. Wysten later appears among the Shadow Unit leaders called during the confrontation with King Ricardus, but no personal attack follows. By his last arc the organization has become the Shadow Legion, the group Thyra trusts most, and operates through the ExceedoGenesis Assassin Hall. Wysten commands a five-person team that marks an inn, enters through a portal, and kills an Emperor-stage target before the victim can recover. A Great Sage then blocks their exit and identifies their likely connection to an earlier assassination. Wysten recognizes the stage gap, orders the threat reported, and prepares the team to resist rather than confess. The confrontation is unresolved when his final scene ends. (Chapters 793, 883)

Appearance and personality

At 237, Wysten has wrinkles on his face. No hair color, eye color, height, build, or individualized clothing is given; his later missions place him among masked assassins in black. (Chapters 524, 542, 883)

Wysten is experienced, disciplined, discreet, and more willing than several peers to preserve the mission by de-escalating. He accepts responsibility for subordinates, acknowledges Nux's superiority once it is undeniable, and continues to give concise orders under lethal pressure. His curiosity about Nux is cautious rather than dismissive, while his loyalty to the Shadow Unit's new command survives the loss of its former prestige. (Chapters 524–542, 883)

Abilities and cultivation

Veteran King-stage cultivation

Wysten is a level-69 King-stage mana cultivator with no body-cultivation advancement and is described as the strongest King in the Shadow Unit. At 237, he is one step from Emperor but estimated to have only fifteen or sixteen years of life remaining; Evane judges his high talent insufficient to complete the breakthrough in time. Thyra also assesses that his lifetime of lethal experience would let him defeat ordinary King-stage cultivators easily and admits she could not beat him at that point. These are informed assessments, not a demonstrated solo victory, and no later Emperor breakthrough is shown. His affinity, spells, mana costs, and cultivation method remain unknown. (Chapter 524)

Greatsword combat and unit synergy

Wysten fights with an unnamed greatsword, resting it on his shoulder before the six-leader formation attacks. His heavy frontal strike works with a shield bearer, two swordsmen, a dagger user, and an archer. Against Nux, this synergy creates overlapping threats, but Nux ducks the allied arrow after blocking Wysten, causing it to pierce Wysten's shoulder; the interaction demonstrates both the formation's coordination and the risk of disruption. Wysten trades several further blows before being knocked unconscious. No named greatsword technique, range, elemental effect, lasting injury, or later refinement is established. (Chapters 531–532)

Assassination command and borrowed portal access

As Shadow Legion leader, Wysten coordinates surveillance, tells Reeve to activate a prepositioned mark, and enters the resulting white portal with four allies. The team uses surprise and layered attacks to pin and kill an Emperor, with Wysten personally covering the target's mouth while the fatal strike lands. The mark and portal are activated by Reeve, not Wysten, so they are borrowed team infrastructure rather than Wysten's innate magic. Their advantages also have limits: a stronger observer can block the portal, and the team recognizes that a Great Sage exceeds them in a direct fight. The corpus supplies no cooldown, maximum portal distance, or independent escape technique for Wysten. (Chapter 883)

Relationships

• Evane: Wysten de-escalates the Shadow Unit's first confrontation with Evane, accepts her authority, and later reports when she summons the reorganizing force. Their relationship is professional rather than personal. (Chapters 524–542)
• Astaria: Astaria is Wysten's longtime superior and one of the few people who knows his confidential identity and strength. He reports candidly to her, obeys the test she arranges, and returns to service after her response to the defeat. (Chapters 524–542)
• Nux: Wysten initially studies Nux as an unexplained threat, then underestimates him in Astaria's test. Defeat makes him address Nux as “Lord,” but the Shadow Unit keeps the ambition to surpass him rather than dissolving. (Chapters 526–542)
• Keeve and Reeve: Wysten leads alongside the two veteran assassins in both the original Shadow Unit and the later Shadow Legion. Their terse disagreement over obvious orders reflects long familiarity, while their final mission shows practiced coordination. (Chapters 524–542, 883)
• Thyra: By the Shadow Legion period, Wysten's group is the force Thyra trusts most. The corpus establishes that institutional confidence but does not show a direct private exchange between them. (Chapter 883)
