Sam
Sam Wiggins is the head of Wisp Tree Town’s Merchant Union and a former Honorary Elder of Twilight Rain. His commercial success and criminal backing make him a local power until Lux captures him, extracts his network’s secrets, and converts him into a Half-Life Zombie tasked with building covert commercial and intelligence fronts.
Biography
The Dragon kingdoms and the Abyss
Sam rises from caravan leader to successful merchant, earning noble clients and control over Wisp Tree Town’s permits and certifications. Twilight Rain recruits him as an Honorary Elder, and its protection turns his confidence into impunity: he regards himself as the town’s underground emperor and makes opponents disappear. That position collapses when Lux’s agents seize him in his office. Sam first tries intimidation and then lies about his rank in the guild, but Shax’s truth-sensitive tickling forces him to identify Twilight Rain agents, merchants, and Lucius. Under continued coercion, he becomes the intermediary used to arrange Lux’s contact with the wider merchant network. (Chapters 723, 725, 728)
Once Lux finishes exploiting that access, he kills Sam with a stab through the heart and immediately raises him as a Half-Life Zombie. Sam retains a normal-looking life, his merchant rank, and his business expertise, but his loyalty becomes unconditional. Eager to serve, he accepts responsibility for coordinating with Keelan, expanding Ars Goetia’s consumable shops, and using those shops as information-gathering fronts patterned after Twilight Rain’s own merchant apparatus. His development is coercive rather than moral redemption: the corrupt merchant’s same connections and ambition remain useful, but ownership of the network and the consequences of disobedience have passed entirely to Lux. (Chapters 736–738)
Appearance and personality
Sam is a Dwarf merchant; the corpus does not establish his hair, eyes, age, or clothing. Before his conversion he is proud, domineering, and accustomed to surviving hardship, yet his bravado depends heavily on Twilight Rain’s protection and fails under an unfamiliar form of interrogation. After becoming a Half-Life Zombie, that competitive commercial energy remains, but it is redirected into eager service and rivalry with Lucius over who can provide more value to their new master. (Chapters 723, 737–738)
Mercantile and undead abilities
Commercial control and intelligence networks
As merchant-union head, Sam can grant operating permits, coordinate trade, draw on noble patrons, and identify commercial agents across Gweliven. Lux repurposes those capabilities to establish shops whose public sales conceal intelligence collection. The power is institutional, not personal combat strength: it relies on reputation, collaborators, and secrecy, and Sam is physically captured once his guards and backer cannot protect him. Exposure of his double role would compromise the network he is ordered to build. (Chapters 723, 737–738)
Half-Life Zombie state
Lux creates Sam’s state by personally stabbing his heart and casting the spell while he remains between life and death. A successful target must be weaker than the caster, and only a necromancer without an Unholy Aura can perform the technique; otherwise the result may be a full Zombie. Sam’s heart and bodily functions resume, his original rank remains concealed from monster detection, his senses and strength improve, and he can outwardly live normally. The decisive cost is autonomy: he becomes incapable of betraying Lux and must answer any summons or order without fail. (Chapter 737)
