Lucius

Lucius Ballard is the wealthy head of Whitebridge City's Merchant Guild and an undercover Honorary Elder of Twilight Rain. His commercial influence makes him valuable enough for Lux to capture, kill, and reanimate as a Half-Life Zombie who can continue passing as the same living merchant.

Biography

Awakening and Leaf Village

Lucius first approaches Nikola while Lux is feigning death, dressed richly and pretending to pay respect to an “unsung hero.” Inwardly, he celebrates Twilight Rain's apparent success and immediately considers the profit available from rebuilding Whitebridge. The scene establishes the merchant's practiced public courtesy, concealed Dark Guild loyalty, and instinct to turn even catastrophe into commercial advantage (Chapter 216).

Years later, testimony identifies Lucius as one of Twilight Rain's important merchant contacts. His influence, guards, protected underground quarters, and High-Ranker bodyguard Ferron make a direct abduction difficult, so Lux uses Nevreal's proposed Savage Lands investment as bait. Lucius's greed draws him into negotiation, while his paranoia prompts traps, reinforcements, and a random-destination teleport artifact when the raid finally closes around him (Chapters 723–736).

Captured after that escape fails, Lucius immediately offers to betray Twilight Rain. Lux instead stabs his heart and uses Half-Life Zombie, restoring the wound while replacing Lucius's loyalties with unconditional service. Lucius then returns to his former organization as a covert asset, promises to warn Aina of threats, invests in Lux's expansion, and supplies names for the campaign against Twilight Rain's merchant network (Chapters 737–740).

Abyssal invasion and broken memories

By Twilight Rain's final defensive crisis, Lucius still outwardly survives as Whitebridge's merchant-guild head, even as his executives, spies, and logistics managers are assassinated. The Dark Guild interprets the Whitebridge battle as another setback without recognizing that Lucius himself has become Lux's hidden servant. His continuing cover therefore helps turn Twilight Rain's commercial infrastructure from a source of strength into a compromised network (Chapter 1036).

Appearance and personality

Lucius is a Dwarf who wears conspicuously expensive clothing befitting a prominent merchant. He is polished, theatrical, greedy, and observant enough to probe a business partner's story without openly exposing his suspicion. Beneath that manner he is vindictive and highly paranoid, maintaining a trapped underground maze and layered guards. After reanimation, the same initiative is redirected into eager fundraising and service to Lux (Chapters 216, 728, 733, 737).

Commercial and undead abilities

Lucius's principal strength is institutional rather than martial. He controls funds, supplies, merchant contacts, guards, spies, and protected properties, and can turn royal exploration into an investment opportunity. His preparation includes assassination defenses and a life-saving teleportation artifact, but these are external resources: once separated from Ferron and tracked through his shadow, Lucius is quickly caught by Lux's stronger servants (Chapters 725, 728, 733, 736).

Half-Life Zombie preserves Lucius's prior rank and outward identity while making him undetectable as a Monster. The repaired heart lets him resume ordinary commercial life, but the spell imposes unconditional loyalty to Lux and effectively removes his ability to betray his new master. He retains judgment and initiative within orders, as shown by proposing personal funds and an investment strategy, rather than becoming a mindless corpse (Chapter 737).

Relationships

• Lux: Lucius celebrates Lux's supposed death, later becomes his captive, and is recreated as a loyal covert agent whose commercial expertise serves Lux's plans (Chapters 216, 736–737).
• Ferron: Ferron is Lucius's right-hand man and strongest visible protector. Lucius's concern for escaping with him delays an otherwise possible solo flight (Chapters 728, 733, 736).
• Harrus: Both serve Twilight Rain, but Lucius dislikes Harrus's intrusive arrogance. They still cooperate when their shared organization is threatened (Chapters 728–731).
• Nevreal: Nevreal plays the respectable royal contact in the trap, exploiting Lucius's desire for influence and future resource profits (Chapters 725, 728–730).
