Avery
Avery is a sentient Ancient Skeleton Pirate King who serves as Eiko's first admiral and principal field commander. A Peak-Demigod World Boss, he combines overwhelming personal power with naval strategy, religious campaigning, and careful obedience to his princess's limits.
Biography
The Divine Army reckoning
Avery first appears behind Eiko on Poseidon's command platform when the Ford Federation fleet closes in. Asked to deal with Admiral Onyx without killing him, Avery accepts the “half-dead” restriction and casually slaps the Supreme back toward his flagship. He then supports the capture of Saints and High-Rankers, demonstrating that his fearsome title is subordinate to precise orders from his princess (Chapters 1008–1009).
After the battle, Avery carries Eiko and Fei Fei on his shoulders into El Dorado and remains close as both guard and adviser. He can fly and perceive the forces of Faith and the Weave, but Eiko's aura can force even him to kneel, a hierarchy he accepts without rebellion. His service grows beyond combat as he helps the Boom Boom Pirate Crew become a governing power (Chapters 1010–1011, 1047).
Open Heaven’s Gate
By the final campaigns, Avery is strategist as well as executioner. He spreads the Boom Boom Religion to increase Eiko's Faith, helps conceal Poseidon, recognizes the danger posed by Nyarlathotep's clone, shields Eiko from hostile pressure, and coordinates maritime defense. He fights Demigods during Agartha's defense and later merges into Eiko's locket with her undead army, retaining his place at the center of her forces (Chapters 1091, 1137–1138, 1172–1175, 1218).
In the postwar Elsoetia Olympics, Avery commands the pirate ships serving as a controlled obstacle. Rather than use lethal ammunition, he orders cannons to fire silvery liquid that encloses swimmers in air bubbles; those strong enough can escape, while the rest safely retire. The episode preserves his theatrical pirate command while showing that he can adapt destructive naval discipline to Eiko's nonlethal rules (Chapter 1231).
Appearance and personality
Avery is a skeletal pirate king, commonly marked by his pirate hat and the flames burning in his eye sockets. He speaks fluently, carries himself with an admiral's formality, and addresses Eiko as “Princess.” His disdain for weaker enemies can be intimidating, but his conduct is disciplined: he asks whether a target should die, obeys the answer exactly, and shifts comfortably between violence, strategy, guardianship, and ceremony (Chapters 1008, 1071, 1137).
Pirate-king abilities
As a Peak-Demigod World Boss with an SSR+++ rating, Avery is far beyond a Supreme: he evades Onyx's full-powered thrust and defeats him with a casual counter. He can fly, fight above or below the sea, raise skeletal spikes from the water to trap fleets, exert pressure on other powerful beings, and coordinate shipboard cannon fire. His senses also register Faith, the Weave, and Outer-God danger (Chapters 1008, 1011, 1172–1174).
Avery's power is not absolute. Poseidon is explicitly stronger because the living ship contains three Demigod cores, and Eiko's authority can suppress Avery through her aura. More importantly, his actions are bounded by her commands: he moderates force when ordered to capture rather than kill and uses escapable bubbles for a sporting event. His latest state remains that of a sentient undead commander within Eiko's portable army (Chapters 1008, 1011, 1218, 1231).
Relationships
- Eiko: Avery treats Eiko as his princess and mistress. Her orders define both his targets and the permissible degree of force, while he supplies her with military judgment, personal protection, and institutional support (Chapters 1008, 1091, 1174).
- Fei Fei: Avery carries Fei Fei beside Eiko and serves the wider Boom Boom command structure in which she participates (Chapter 1010).
- Admiral Onyx: Onyx is Avery's first demonstrated opponent; the effortless defeat establishes the gap between a Supreme admiral and the ancient pirate king (Chapter 1008).
- Nyarlathotep: Avery recognizes the Outer God's clone and treats its presence as a threat requiring concealment and protection rather than a routine naval engagement (Chapters 1172–1174).
