Nyarlathotep

Nyarlathotep is an Outer God of madness who emerges from Azathoth after Daniel offers a Pillar of Eternity. In exchange for millions of sacrifices from every conquered world, the Crawling Chaos lends its overwhelming mental power to Daniel’s invasion of Elysium and Solais.

Biography

Abyssal invasion and broken memories

Nyarlathotep materializes from a detached mass of Azathoth’s flesh and accepts Daniel’s bargain because revenge and conquest promise sacrifices to the Outer Gods. It becomes the decisive force behind Daniel’s subjugation of the Abyss, driving enemy retainers insane and turning them against their own lords. Once the invasion begins, it treats conquest as entertainment, makes Halfling families kill one another, ignores the central coalition’s need for help, and continues west whenever wider strategy threatens to interrupt its pleasure in suffering. (Chapters 1083, 1092, 1099, 1125, 1133)

Its alliance with Daniel is transactional rather than loyal. Nyarlathotep probes for his secrets, mocks his setbacks, and threatens to destroy the world alone if kept waiting, while Daniel expects delivery of the Pillars. This mutual distrust matters when the invasion stalls: the Outer God’s overwhelming strength can force submission, but its appetite for chaos repeatedly overrides efficient command and leaves other Abyssal Lords to manage battles without it. The rescue from the Abyss and the final war

Nyarlathotep projects Peak-Demigod clones because its true godly body cannot freely descend into a world still governed by Eriol. A clone’s attempt to destroy Agartha is stopped by Aurora’s sacrifice, and another is annihilated after Eiko’s ocean allies expose how poorly its abominations function at sea. Lux later attacks the soul-link connecting its Elysian vessel to its Abyssal body; Daniel simultaneously steals its Golden Scales, and the trapped Outer God is destroyed despite begging to betray its ally. Daniel subsequently uses the Golden Scales to revive Nyarlathotep. During the final confrontation, the restored Outer God abandons independent combat, turns into black mist, and merges into Daniel together with its larger silhouette. It never reappears as a separate being after that fusion, so its latest source-grounded status is absorption into Daniel rather than a second individually described death. (Chapter 1213)

Appearance and personality

Nyarlathotep’s manifested body stands on two legs but is otherwise alien: countless tentacles writhe from it, a long whip-like appendage rises from its elongated head, and its smile exposes numerous razor-sharp teeth. Its amusement depends on terror, betrayal, and disorder. It is sadistic, contemptuous, inquisitive, and supremely self-assured, yet that certainty collapses into rage and pleading when Eiko repeatedly destroys its clones and Lux threatens its actual soul. Outer God abilities and limitations

Madness, domination, and abominations

Nyarlathotep can spread madness across individuals or cities, control subordinates belonging to opposing Demigods, and compel victims to murder allies and family. Its infectious influence also intensifies the sadism of accompanying Abyssal creatures. Clones retain a portion of this mental force and can inflict stabbing psychic pain over a defended city, but a Pillar of Eternity can cancel the effect, and a clone does not possess every ability of the original body. (Chapters 1092, 1099, 1140–1141)

Clones, physical force, and soul-link vulnerability

The Outer God plants consciousness into detached bodies because direct divine descent is restricted. These Peak-Demigod vessels have immense strength, can summon controlled abominations, revive fallen Demigods, and manifest giant tentacles, but terrain and specialized opposition matter: ocean deployment strands its ground-oriented forces, while Eiko’s artillery destroys the clone. More critically, every projection remains connected to the true soul; Lux exploits that connection with sustained soul damage, preventing retreat and turning a remote body into a path to the original. Relationships

• Daniel: Their bargain joins Daniel’s conquest to Nyarlathotep’s demand for mass sacrifice. Each plans around the other, but both are willing to betray the alliance when survival or power is at stake. (Chapters 1083, 1092, 1133, 1189, 1213)
• Lux: Lux identifies the projected-body soul link and destroys Nyarlathotep’s soul despite the enormous difference in raw power. (Chapters 1140, 1188–1189)
