Bu Wol-sun

Bu Wol-sun, also called Namgung Un, is the Ax Saint and last Murim Lord of the martial world recorded in The Chronicles of the Heavenly Demon. The local corpus applies both personal names to the same old man: the Namgung Family's leader, So Baek-hyang's lifelong opponent, and the master who passes the orthodox path to the hunter known as Venomous Snake.

Biography

The last righteous leader

Bu Wol-sun rises through the Namgung Family with a Heavenly Body Constitution, reaches the height of his form while young, and becomes the leader chosen to oppose the Demonic Cult. When a constellation-born epidemic turns the martial world into jiangshi, he and So Baek-hyang remain mobile only by spending innate energy to control their failing bodies. Rather than abandon their followers as corpses, they gather the wandering jiangshi each morning and continue their Righteous-Demonic War so that neither tradition will be erased by disease. Wol-sun knows Baek-hyang is stronger, but his refusal to renounce the righteous path prevents her from giving him the surrender or merciful death that would make their struggle meaningless. A disciple and a life after the apocalypse

The prospect of a successor changes what survival can mean for Wol-sun. He accepts Venomous Snake—whose personal name is Liao Fan—as his final disciple, then undergoes surgery that cures the epidemic but removes the lower abdomen through which he gathered internal energy. Although permanently unable to cultivate chi as before, he insists that martial arts remain wherever the practitioner's heart and knowledge remain. He fights Baek-hyang once more after Gong-ja restores their followers for a final battle, survives her deliberately shallow finishing blow, and later becomes a senior guardian of Chen Mu-mun. By the later chapters he has retired from leading the Martial Alliance, remains involved with the guild's disciples, and is still socially active among the Tower's older martial artists. Appearance

Bu Wol-sun is an elderly man with a beard and a white martial robe. The epidemic leaves his muscles dry and his movements outwardly weak, making his late fights look almost childish despite the principles behind them. He is loud, teasing, and easily drawn into crude arguments with So Baek-hyang, yet his refusal to discard his people or his path reveals the stubborn responsibility beneath that comic manner.

Axe arts and internal energy

At his height, Wol-sun is the strongest orthodox martial artist in his world and is renowned for wielding a jade axe. The surviving record names Destruction of the Yellow Moon among his techniques and shows him using throws, joint control, strikes, and precise counters during his final contest. His great reserve of innate true chi lets him force an infected body to breathe, move, and fight long after ordinary victims have become jiangshi. That control is also a terminal expenditure: once the energy is exhausted, his organs and limbs fail, and the cure that saves him permanently removes his ability to gather internal energy in the lower abdomen. Martial insight and instruction

Wol-sun's value as a master outlasts his physical cultivation. He quickly evaluates Venomous Snake's talent, teaches orthodox techniques and the principle of placing one's own sense of nature within the sword, and leaves his disciple with lessons that mature during later seclusion. Liao Fan subsequently reproduces Wol-sun's body-control principles, Destruction of the Yellow Moon, and the Righteous Sect's challenge to the Demonic Cult in his duel with Gong-ja. These later feats belong to the disciple, but they demonstrate that Wol-sun successfully preserves an otherwise ruined lineage. (Chapters 77–79 and 275–280)

Relationships

• So Baek-hyang: His lifelong rival and the only surviving leader opposite him after the epidemic. Their repeated war is also companionship, mutual recognition, and a shared refusal to let disease determine their world's ending.
• Chen Mu-mun: Wol-sun's final disciple, known publicly as Venomous Snake and personally as Liao Fan. Wol-sun entrusts him with the orthodox martial lineage and later serves as a senior guardian of his guild.
