Medicine King, whose name is Sean McCallister, is a senior physician and pharmacist famous for expensive, high-grade elixirs before the rise of Alchemist. Proud of his experience and loudly dismissive of younger hunters, he becomes Alchemist's principal research partner when an unknown epidemic threatens the ruined Murim world. His clinical and surgical work helps turn her theoretical cure into treatment for the last survivors, after which he continues as a doctor for Chen Mu-mun and later manages Cafe Planetarium.

Biography

Rivalry and the ruined Murim

Medicine King enters the Great Library expedition as the disease expert chosen by Marcus Calenberry. He is already a celebrated pharmacist whose reservations are booked far in advance, and he treats Gong-ja's recommendation of the unknown Alchemist as youthful ignorance. The public contest meant to settle their status instead produces his Unique recovery potion beside her quasi-Myth Soma Strawberry. He repeatedly demands rematches rather than accept the result, but humiliation does not end his usefulness: his potion can still heal deadly wounds, and his long experience becomes important as soon as the party enters a world destroyed by a contagion. The Murim crisis forces Medicine King to choose between wounded pride and medical responsibility. Alchemist exposes the full mechanics and weaknesses of her own skills, asks him to support her, and offers her recipes if that is the price of cooperation. Insulted by the suggestion that he would steal credit, he nevertheless sits beside her, records her instructions, requests diverse samples, and works without rest while Gong-ja carries their accumulated findings through repeated regressions. When Alchemist's twentieth-floor pharmacy and vaccine service overwhelm the market, Medicine King's own high-end business loses its former advantage. He first fishes for the same free real estate Gong-ja gave his rival, then accepts Chen Mu-mun's offer to distribute vaccines, handle emergencies, and serve as the recovering Murim Lord's exclusive doctor on the twenty-second floor. He admits that he has been lonely, and the new arrangement gives his skill a community that needs it rather than a prestige contest he can no longer win. Rivalry therefore settles into division of labor: Alchemist's institution develops and produces at scale, while Medicine King applies treatment and continuing care close to the dangerous stage. Medicine King later finances the establishment of Cafe Planetarium in the Great Library and works behind its counter in bartender or manager's clothing. The role draws on a culinary career that preceded the Tower as well as his habits as a provider: he prepares meals, drinks, and supplies for hunters while policing the cafe's disorder with the same abrasive concern he once used on patients. By the Garden era he remains its active manager, shouting at disruptive Constellations and customers even though most of them are far older than he assumes. His latest work is less glamorous than the title Medicine King suggests, but it preserves a stable meeting place for people moving among worlds. (Chapters 151 and 382)

Appearance and personality

Medicine King is a short, stubborn-looking elderly man with white hair. He often stands with his hands behind his back and uses a monocle when examining patients or bodies. He is physically a support hunter: in the ruined Murim's cold he cannot protect himself with aura, must be carried and warmed by a combatant, and reacts to martial zombies with open panic rather than heroic composure. He is boastful, competitive, abrasive, and comically unwilling to concede defeat. • Kim Gong-ja: Gong-ja publicly challenges Medicine King's superiority and brings him into the Murim expedition. Medicine King resents his confidence in Alchemist but ultimately contributes to Gong-ja's solution and later works within the medical infrastructure Gong-ja establishes.
