Dongsoo Hwang

Dongsoo Hwang is a Korean-born S-rank hunter who emigrates to the United States and joins the Scavenger Guild. His pursuit of private revenge connects Jinwoo’s earliest dungeon survival to the international hunter community, and his refusal to release that grudge ultimately destroys him in the original timeline.

Biography

Revenge for Dongsuk

Dongsoo learns that his older brother, Dongsuk Hwang, died in the C-rank dungeon where Jinwoo and Jinho Yoo were the only survivors. He does not idealize Dongsuk: he knows his brother was morally compromised, but insists that Dongsuk was still good to him. His first practical questions concern Korean law and whether a hunter can avoid punishment for killing inside a dungeon. After learning that the incident left no recoverable evidence, he arranges a two-week visit to Korea and identifies the two survivors as targets. (Chapter 9)

His attachment is rooted in childhood loss. After their parents died in a dungeon break, Dongsuk raised him, making the older brother both family and protector. Dongsoo’s grief consequently expresses itself as entitlement to retaliation rather than an effort to learn what actually happened. He hates magic beasts and readily treats people associated with his brother’s death as enemies, even when the available evidence does not support his assumptions. (Chapter 18)

The hunter from a dungeon

While working with the American Hunter Command Center, Dongsoo interrogates a powerful man who emerged from a dungeon and claims to be Jinwoo’s father, Ilhwan Sung. Dongsoo turns off official recording equipment and deliberately provokes Ilhwan under the claim that he may be a magic beast. Once Ilhwan’s connection to Jinwoo becomes clear, the interrogation becomes another route toward Dongsoo’s private vendetta. His silver-white aura and S-rank confidence are useless against Ilhwan, who defeats him decisively and warns him never to set foot in Korea. (Chapter 18)

Even after investigators find evidence that Ilhwan protected civilians rather than attacked them, Dongsoo continues calling him a beast. He conceals the information that does not fit his position and focuses on the humiliation of his defeat. Rather than reconsidering the revenge he has built around incomplete facts, he seeks stronger equipment from Scavenger and waits for another chance. (Chapter 20)

Abduction of Jinho

Thomas Andre and Laura recognize that Dongsoo’s obsession creates a dangerous conflict with Jinwoo. Thomas orders him to stay away, both to protect a guild member and to avoid a clash with a hunter whose true strength is still uncertain. Dongsoo evades the guild’s monitoring and abducts Jinho from the street, taking him to an abandoned factory. There he repeatedly beats Jinho and uses a healer to keep the captive conscious, demanding a confession about Dongsuk’s death even after Jinho no longer has the strength to answer. (Chapters 37, 54–55)

The kidnapping reveals the full corruption of Dongsoo’s claimed loyalty. His target is not the person who killed Dongsuk, but the more accessible survivor whose suffering he can control. When Jinwoo arrives, Dongsoo refuses even to let the healer stabilize Jinho. He attacks with the same S-rank power that once made him confident of legal impunity, but Jinwoo drops him with a single blow and then kills him in retaliation for Jinho’s torture. Jinwoo extracts Dongsoo’s shadow afterward and names it Greed, reducing the hunter who abused his status to a soldier compelled to serve the man he hated. (Chapters 55–56)

The rewritten world

When Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation and fights the Monarchs before gates and hunters ever appear, the shadow Greed disappears because the restored past contains the living Dongsoo. In that rewritten world, Dongsoo and Dongsuk survive as ordinary men but become partners in fraud. Their crimes are exposed, and both brothers are arrested rather than gaining supernatural power and international status. (Chapters 75, 77)

Appearance and personality

Dongsoo is physically imposing and carries the heavy, threatening presence expected of an S-rank brawler. His eyes and manner are repeatedly cold, and his hands become surrounded by pale silver or white energy when he prepares to strike. The narrative emphasizes intimidation and force more than clothing or other fixed visual details. (Chapters 18, 55)

He is proud, vindictive, and skilled at turning institutional privilege into personal leverage. He can recognize that Dongsuk was not a good person, yet treats brotherhood as sufficient justification for murder. Defeat deepens rather than corrects his grievance: he suppresses contrary evidence about Ilhwan, ignores Thomas’s direct warning, and tortures Jinho after the victim can no longer meaningfully answer. His courage is selective. He attacks people he expects to control, but relies on citizenship, guild backing, legal ambiguity, and superior rank to shield him from consequences. S-rank brawler

Dongsoo possesses the enhanced strength, speed, durability, and mana of an S-rank hunter. He channels a bright silver-white aura around his fists and uses direct physical attacks rather than spells or summons. Against ordinary hunters, that rank makes him an overwhelming threat and an important asset to one of the world’s strongest guilds. (Chapters 18, 55)

Investigative and institutional access

The American Hunter Command Center trusts Dongsoo enough to participate in Ilhwan’s interrogation, and Scavenger has the resources to monitor, heal, equip, and support its members internationally. Dongsoo understands procedures well enough to disable the recording before pursuing a personal line of questioning. This is access, not moral judgment: he uses it to hide a provocation rather than conduct an impartial investigation. (Chapters 18, 20)

Severe power ceiling

Official rank does not place Dongsoo near the story’s highest combat tier. Ilhwan defeats him before he can mount an effective response, while Jinwoo knocks him down with one strike and remains completely beyond his ability to injure. Dongsoo’s reliance on rank and reputation leaves him unprepared for opponents whose strength exceeds the measurable S-rank system. (Chapters 18, 55)
