Ying Tianlong

Ying Tianlong is the veteran Northern admiral commanding First Fleet, the best-equipped and most experienced conventional fleet in the Alliance. Pride and resentment make him slow to obey Kang Hui during the Moonfiend expedition, but he accepts responsibility by leading his stranded force in the charge that gives Tyrannosaurus time to survive.

Biography

Pride breaks the formation

Ying questions Kang Hui’s sudden defensive order and moves First Fleet into position too slowly. When the alien planet launches its asteroid barrage, the fleet is left outside Tyrannosaurus’s compact formation and suffers the consequences of that delay. Ying admits that pride clouded his judgment, accepts the prospect of discipline, and reorganizes his capital ship and dreadnoughts as a shield while Kang Hui’s forces help extract them from the immediate crisis. First Fleet’s final charge

When the alien planet later threatens Tyrannosaurus before its transformation is complete, Ying decides to correct his mistake with his life. He calmly tells Kang Hui to preserve the Bastion, then leads First Fleet on a collision course and dies with more than one hundred thousand soldiers in the assault. The charge buys Tyrannosaurus the time it needs; Kang Hui later recounts Ying’s end as heroism without reviving their rivalry. (Chapters 688–709)

Appearance and personality

Ying looks to be in his forties, although white streaks at his temples suggest greater age. He stands tall and straight with a younger soldier’s bearing. Anger reddens his face during the dispute with Kang Hui, while his final transmission is calm and resolute. (Chapters 681–688)

He is experienced, capable, obstinate, and intensely proud. Political enemies have blocked the promotion his record might otherwise merit, worsening his contempt for the younger Kang Hui. That pride causes a grave operational error, but Ying neither hides from blame nor sacrifices others while saving himself; his last decision converts rivalry into duty at fatal cost. Fleet command

Ying commands the North’s elite First Fleet, including ten Sovereign-class dreadnoughts, and responds to the asteroid attack by placing its heaviest ships between the threat and smaller vessels. His experience makes him a formidable conventional commander, but the Moonfiend battle also demonstrates that training and equipment cannot repair a formation compromised by delayed obedience. The corpus calls Ying a military secret weapon in reference to his experience and capabilities, not a named Adept power. It assigns him no Discipline, cultivation rank, or personal combat scene.
