Holmen

Holmen is the veteran Northern admiral commanding the Arachnid Bastion and its Seventh Cosmic Fleet. A celebrated soldier and leading military hawk, he is first shown using overwhelming force to erase inconvenient evidence. During the alien expedition, that same aggressive doctrine drives Arachnid into close combat before Holmen chooses self-destruction rather than allow the trapped crew to be consumed.

Biography

The hawk aboard Arachnid

Holmen rises from childhood mecha training through battleship command to admiral and Chief of National Defense. He advocates hostile expansion against the East and West, favors raze-and-occupy operations, and uses Arachnid’s main battery to destroy Crimson Star while trying to eliminate pirates, evidence of Northern interference, and Zeus together. The episode establishes that his strategic ruthlessness predates the alien war and is not simply battlefield necessity. (Chapter 322)

Arachnid meets the alien planet

In the Shattered Starfields expedition, Holmen delegates effectively to a skilled and loyal staff while directing Arachnid’s railguns, fighter divisions, and Ares’ Cleaver configuration. Early success against alien fighters feeds his belief that the Bastion can destroy or capture the living planet. He closes for a direct strike, but the planet’s defenses absorb Arachnid’s blades and its tentacles immobilize the ship. (Chapters 672–688)

Final detonation

With escape impossible and the alien vortex consuming the smaller craft, Holmen orders Arachnid to self-destruct. The explosion kills him and more than one hundred thousand personnel, denies their life force to the enemy, and leaves a visible wound on the planet, although it does not destroy it. Northern authorities later compensate his family but grant him no posthumous honor, in contrast to Ying Tianlong. (Chapters 690–697)

Appearance and personality

At seventy-six, Holmen is a towering, silver-haired man with steely blue eyes, a hooked nose, thin mouth, and a vulture-like appearance. He sits straight in a crisp white uniform bearing three gold stars. His deep voice and stony features reinforce the discomfort caused by his gaze. (Chapter 322)

He is cold, combative, authoritarian, and confident in overwhelming force. He is also a capable delegator whose crews love him despite angry outbursts, because he trusts specialists to do their work. His ambition and appetite for decisive victory help lure Arachnid too close, but his final decision is resolute and denies the enemy an easy consumption of his people. (Chapters 322 and 683–691)

Bastion and fleet command

Holmen has decades of piloting and battleship experience and commands Arachnid’s main cannon, railgun batteries, thousands of fighters, armored legs, and Ares’ Cleaver assault form. He coordinates specialized units rather than micromanaging every station. Arachnid’s physical power can damage a small moon and wound an alien planet through self-destruction, but its direct blades cannot penetrate the planet’s active defenses. (Chapters 322 and 683–692)

No demonstrated personal Discipline

The corpus does not assign Holmen an Adept Discipline, cultivation rank, or personal combat feat outside command of the Bastion. Once Arachnid is immobilized, he has no individual means of escape or victory. His last weapon is the ship’s destructive energy and mass. (Chapters 683–691)

Relationships

• Kang Hui: The expedition commander Holmen criticizes but still intends to support, because defense of the North outweighs their personal conflict.
• Ying Tianlong: Another admiral killed in the expedition. Later accounts pair their final decisions as demonstrations of Northern resolve, though only Ying receives a posthumous title.
• Lan Jue: Holmen once tries to erase Zeus with a planetary strike. Lan Jue later reviews Arachnid’s final recording and honors the sacrifice despite that history.
