Yan Yuan

Yan Yuan is a rising Northern admiral who commands the speed-focused Bastion Heron during the failed expedition into the Shattered Starfields. He enters the campaign eager to prove himself against Kang Hui, but preserves his crew when the aliens exploit Heron’s weaknesses. The ship survives in crippled form, while Yan lives and loses his command.

Biography

Heron enters the expedition

Yan insists on joining the expedition because Kang Hui’s faster rise and greater prestige offend his perfectionism. When reports show that other Bastions have been ambushed, he correctly anticipates that Heron may face the same treatment and prepares for combat. An alien planet nevertheless traps the ship, defeats its speed advantage, and tears away a wing. Yan responds by activating Heron’s emergency separation: the damaged rear becomes an explosive decoy while the crew compartment escapes in the forward section. (Chapters 685–687)

Survival without command

Yan reports the ambush and Heron’s crippling damage to Kang Hui, then joins the Northern withdrawal. Although the ship escapes without loss of life, rebuilding it is prohibitively expensive, and Northern authorities strip Yan of command without later restoring it.
