Redbeard

Redbeard is the pirate who takes command of the Moonfiend Pirates after the Pontiff's Citadel removes Su Xiaosu. Formerly the second most feared pirate in the Shattered Starfields, he folds his own clan into the larger organization and governs the Citadel's pirate proxy. He is a ninth-level fifth-rank metamorphosis Adept whose directly demonstrated transformation channels a lion-like Wildman. (Chapters 563–564, 572, and 575–578)

Biography

Consolidation and destruction

Redbeard rises because the Citadel values a clever local commander who benefits from its weapons and protection. When pirate clans begin disappearing, he gives Gabriel a restrained assessment: the unknown attackers are unusually equipped, but rushing blindly would unite their enemies' advantage rather than preserve Moonfiend strength. His apparent loyalty masks territorial contempt for Gabriel, and his confidence rests on the three planets' defenses and a vast but loosely coordinated pirate coalition. That complacency lets Star Division penetrate the system before he recognizes the attack as a direct assault. (Chapters 563–564 and 575–577)

Once the palace defenses turn against him, Redbeard orders resistance and brings his strongest Adepts to the control room. Lan Jue destroys four attackers immediately, and Gabriel refuses to intervene, leaving Redbeard responsible for recovering the only controls that can reverse the battle. He commits fully to his lion transformation because escape is no longer available, but Lan Jue's Captus strike erases Redbeard and his remaining elite in a single sweep. His death breaks the defenders' morale and helps Star Division retake the Moonfiend organization for Xiaosu. (Chapters 577–579)

Appearance and personality

Redbeard is tall and bald, with a downtrodden-looking face and an enormous fiery red beard. He resembles a stereotypically brutish pirate, but the narration emphasizes that he is unusually clever and difficult to outthink. His humor and deference around Gabriel are calculated; once the Archangel leaves, Redbeard's private scorn exposes how lightly he regards outside authority on pirate territory. (Chapters 563–564)

He is cunning, acquisitive, territorial, and protective of power more than people. He requests still more railguns despite already commanding extensive defenses and cultivates hidden routes and strong subordinates. His early caution is real, but comfortable rule has dulled the Moonfiend Pirates' vigilance, and crisis eventually drives his temper beyond the careful calculation that built his position. Disciplines and abilities

Redbeard is a ninth-level fifth-rank shifter. A-Mei reports that his Discipline is his beard, but the direct battle provides the more precise evidence: his beard lengthens as his body expands to roughly three meters, and the narration identifies the power as metamorphosis channeling the spirit of a lion, one of the stronger shifter transformations. The corpus does not separately demonstrate a beard-only technique, so the earlier report should not be treated as a distinct confirmed power. (Chapters 572 and 578)

He concentrates his Discipline into the physical transformation, greatly enlarging his muscles and turning himself into a Wildman-like behemoth. His recent promotion makes him formidable among ordinary Adepts, but rank offers no protection against Lan Jue's near-Paragon combined power and Captus. Under the sword's suppressive red light Redbeard can barely breathe or advance, and his strongest state is destroyed before he lands an attack. (Chapter 578)

Relationships

• Su Xiaosu: Redbeard is Xiaosu's longstanding pirate rival. She previously overpowered and nearly killed him, while his later takeover of the Moonfiend Pirates makes him the chief obstacle to her return.
• Gabriel: Gabriel supervises Redbeard for the Pontiff's Citadel and trusts his self-interest to ensure loyalty. Redbeard resents that oversight, and Gabriel ultimately steps aside rather than defend him from Lan Jue.
• Lan Jue: Lan Jue leads the force that overturns Redbeard's defenses and kills him with Captus after the pirate leader attempts to retake the control room.
