Granny Bess
Granny Bess is the elderly retirement-home identity used by the legendary vintner Bize, not a separate woman. The name “Bess” is recognized as an anglicized form of Bize when she confronts Aubert. Her concealed life places her near Zhou Qianlin, whose character and rare Discipline she observes before forcing a severe test intended to help her.
Biography
The woman by the window
As Granny Bess, Bize lives quietly in a retirement home where Qianlin cleans her room and clothes. Her meticulous dress, strange clarity, interest in old wine, and subtle power mark her as more than she appears. She watches Qianlin closely, values the young woman’s uncalculated care for the residents, and warns Lan Jue to treat her well. (Chapters 118–328)
A coercive lesson
Bess encloses Qianlin in a blood cocoon and demands altruistic blood from Lan Jue, overwhelming him with a layered protogenic Domain when he tries to fight. The apparent threat becomes a test and intervention: she confirms his willingness to sacrifice himself, explains the bond created by Qianlin’s Silkworm power, and forces conditions that deepen their connection. Her claimed helpful purpose does not make the abduction, threat, or violence consensual. (Chapters 329–340)
Bize revealed
At Barrows, Granny Bess is revealed as Bize-Leroy when she uses a painstakingly prepared arrow to purge Aubert’s corruption. The reconciled Gods of Wine later join humanity’s defense and disappear in a sacrificial final attack. Lan Jue recovers their soul fragments, and the epilogue establishes that Bize and Aubert are active again in the immortal realm, growing grapes together. The Granny Bess cover does not continue as an independent identity after the reveal. (Chapters 364–368 and 818–903)
Appearance and personality
As Granny Bess, she is short, thin, slightly stooped, and apparently near death, with long snow-white hair, vivid clear eyes, and meticulously clean pink clothing. In combat her fingernails lengthen into red claws and the frail appearance is overwhelmed by Paragon power. The later Bize identity is the same body and consciousness, not a replacement. She is quiet, observant, exacting, and capable of both genuine care and frightening manipulation. Bess judges moral character through action, keeps promises over centuries, and accepts harsh coercion as a legitimate teaching method. Her devotion to Aubert and wine ultimately draws her from concealment into reconciliation and humanity’s war. (Chapters 254–368 and 818–894)

Blood and protogenic Domains
Bess is an undisclosed Paragon able to create nested realities of blood-red terror and black emptiness, form crushing hands, suppress another Adept’s Discipline, and manipulate blood through claw-like nails and red threads. Her strength leaves Lan Jue almost no chance in direct combat before she chooses to stop. (Chapters 329–337)
Guidance, moonlight, and limits
She understands the Silkworm or Queen of Heaven Discipline well enough to diagnose Qianlin’s bond and shape its development. As Bize, she also uses concentrated moonlight and the purifying arrow against Aubert, then combines her red power with his in the final war. She can be expended in that sacrificial attack; her later return depends on recovered soul fragments and the new immortal realm rather than ordinary invulnerability. (Chapters 337–368 and 818–903)
