Clockmaker

Clockmaker, also known as the Epochrion, is a founding leader of Skyfire Avenue and one of the setting's foremost time adepts. She leaves the Avenue after a painful estrangement, rises within the Great Conclave, and eventually returns to help lead humanity through the alien war.

Biography

Departure and return

The Clockmaker helped found Skyfire Avenue, served as the Clairvoyant's assistant, chaired its council, and operated the Horologium before becoming the Northern Paragon called the Epochrion. Her departure was personal as well as political: she loved the Clairvoyant, who loved her sister, and could face neither that relationship nor the Wine Master's unspoken devotion. She therefore accepted the Terminator's welcome in the North and joined the Great Conclave. After the Clairvoyant dies, she returns to Skyfire Avenue, explaining that she stayed away while he lingered near death because she could not bear to see him that way. She reopens her old shop and reclaims the identity of Clockmaker. (Chapters 433–434, 488–490, 501, 531)

Her return also resolves the long stalemate with the Wine Master. The Terminator deliberately provokes him into stating his feelings, after which the Wine Master proposes with a ring he made himself and Huan Xue accepts. During the alien war she joins Skyfire Avenue's strongest expeditions, manipulates the timing of entire battlefields, and fights among the human Paragons to the end. When the Violet Prince falls into the Strategy of the Seven Stars, she is the first to recognize that humanity's faith can sustain the sword bearers; her call for everyone to pray helps turn scattered belief into a unified source of support. Appearance and personality

The Clockmaker retains a youthful, beautiful appearance despite her age, with delicate lips, a pretty voice, and pale hands. She is emotionally perceptive and generally warm, but her history with the Clairvoyant and Wine Master shows a tendency to retreat rather than confront pain directly. Once she returns, that reserve gives way to loyalty, composure, and decisive leadership. She can also answer the Wine Master's jealousy with teasing candor rather than embarrassment. Disciplines and abilities

Time Discipline

As the Epochrion, the Clockmaker is a high-level Paragon whose Domain changes the flow of time across selected areas. She can slow opponents, accelerate allies, and disrupt the timing of attacks so that alien forces strike one another. Her dharmic image takes the form of a vast grandfather clock, and by the final campaign she has reached the Reflection of Heaven and Earth. (Chapters 433, 739–740, 829, 891)

Her control has explicit limits. She states that no one truly masters time, and a sufficiently powerful shockwave from an Infinite-level opponent can shatter her Domain. Her ability is therefore extraordinary local manipulation rather than absolute command over chronology. (Chapters 820–822)

Relationships

• Clairvoyant: She was the Clairvoyant's assistant and loved him, while he loved her sister. That unresolved attachment precipitated her departure, and his death finally allowed her to return home. (Chapters 489–490, 501, 531)
• Wine Master: The Wine Master loves the Clockmaker for decades but initially lacks the courage to say so. After her return, he proposes and she accepts, transforming their long mutual history into an acknowledged partnership. (Chapters 489–490, 657)
• Terminator: The Terminator gives Huan Xue a place in the Great Conclave and remains a close friend. His staged romantic challenge later pushes the Wine Master to act, though Huan Xue makes clear that she regards the Terminator as a brother rather than a lover. (Chapters 489–490, 657)
• Yan Ningya: Yan Ningya's unusual time Discipline first gives Skyfire Avenue evidence that the Northern Epochrion is connected to its missing Clockmaker. (Chapter 433)
