Verne

Verne is the commanding Master of Lunar Observatory Forty-Nine during the Antarctic campaign. He cooperates with Sunny against Gates and unexplained disappearances, but refuses to abandon a thousand soldiers, scientists, and civilians when evacuation appears impossible. His final order sends Sunny away with Professor Obel before the entire facility is destroyed. (Chapters 877–906)

Biography

Commander of the isolated observatory

Verne commands roughly one hundred Awakened, a thousand mundane soldiers, and five hundred civilian staff at a fortified Antarctic research facility. He receives Sunny's Irregulars during a blizzard and gives a sober account of the worsening communications failure. Steady and professional, he treats the visiting Master as a partner while continuing to carry responsibility for every person sheltering behind the walls. (Chapters 877–882)

When a Gate opens, Verne leads the local defense and kills a Corrupted abomination with Kim's support while Sunny handles the Gate Guardian. He then joins Sunny and Professor Obel in investigating people who vanish without bodies, blood, tracks, or sensor evidence. Verne unseals restricted sections, establishes paired responsibility, supplies mind-protection Memories, and continues adapting as disappearances spread through both guarded groups and elite Awakened. (Chapters 882–899)

Sunny concludes that a vastly dangerous entity threatens the facility and urges immediate evacuation, but the blizzard, mountains, failing transports, and lack of Dream Realm communications make moving the whole population nearly suicidal. Verne considers sending volunteers to sleep despite the risk of First Nightmares, then accepts that there may be no time. He distinguishes his own mission from Sunny's: Verne must protect the facility, while Sunny was ordered to save Professor Obel. (Chapters 899–900)

Verne orders Sunny to take Obel in the Rhino and leave at once, hoping that at least the irreplaceable scientist survives if everyone else is lost. He remains with the garrison and civilians. Soon afterward Sunny knows that Verne and every person left at the observatory are dead; the exact final confrontation is not shown from Verne's perspective. Sunny later recalls Verne's skepticism when choosing to lead a much larger civilian convoy through the mountains anyway. (Chapters 900–906)

Appearance and personality

Verne is an older Master with a steady gait, stern bearing, and calm confidence that persists under exhaustion. His face becomes increasingly somber as the observatory's people disappear, but he continues appearing before subordinates as a controlled officer rather than broadcasting panic. The corpus does not supply a detailed account of hair, eyes, clothing, or distinctive marks. (Chapters 877–900)

He is dutiful, pragmatic, and capable of accepting grim arithmetic without becoming indifferent. Verne mobilizes every available protection and listens to Sunny's unconventional analysis, yet will not pretend a mass evacuation can succeed when his experience says it cannot. His final compromise is sacrificial rather than cowardly: he stays with those he commands and gives the smaller rescue mission its best chance. (Chapters 877–906)

Abilities and Aspect

Verne is a battle-tested Master capable of killing a Corrupted Nightmare Creature with Kim's assistance and commanding a large mixed garrison. The corpus does not name his Aspect, Abilities, Flaw, preferred weapon, or Transformation. Because the fight is summarized, it also does not isolate what part of the victory comes from Verne's power and what part comes from Kim's weak-point perception. (Chapters 882–886)

His most extensively demonstrated competencies are military leadership, threat response, logistics, and institutional authority. Sunny

Verne and Sunny begin as peer commanders with different missions. Verne supplies local forces and listens to Sunny's warnings; Sunny respects his steadiness but grows furious when time and logistics make saving everyone impossible. Their last disagreement ends in mutual understanding. Verne entrusts Obel's escape to Sunny and challenges him to prove that an apparently impossible rescue can work, a phrase Sunny remembers when accepting later refugees. (Chapters 877–906)

Professor Obel, Beth, and Kim

Verne protects Obel and Beth as part of the observatory's scientific population and ultimately prioritizes their departure because of Obel's unique value. Kim supports his battle against a Corrupted creature by identifying a vulnerability. These are professional wartime relationships; the corpus does not show private friendship, but Verne's choices directly enable Obel and Beth to survive the facility's fall. (Chapters 877–900)

Items

Verne has access to the observatory's armory, sensors, fortifications, vehicles, and a collected pool of Memories offering mental protection. These are garrison resources rather than named personal possessions.
