Shifty
Shifty is the designation Sunny gives a roguish fellow slave in his First Nightmare. One of four survivors of the Mountain King's first attack, he helps escape the caravan but succumbs to Bloodbane poison secretly placed in the group's water and falls to his death while climbing the mountain. (Chapters 3–11)
Biography
Flight from the Mountain King
Shifty first draws attention when he tries to reach Bloodbane berries and is stopped by Scholar, who warns that they grow where human blood was spilled and can kill an adult. When a Mountain King's Larva rises from a chained corpse, Shifty obeys Sunny's shouted plan and pulls the slave chain tight while Sunny strangles it. Sunny later frees him, Scholar, and himself with a dead guard's key rather than leaving either companion shackled. (Chapters 3–5)
During the attack by the Mountain King, Shifty is frightened, angry, and openly focused on escape. He initially wants to flee into the lethal cold, then helps Sunny, Scholar, and Hero push a wagon over the cliff with the Tyrant entangled in its chains. Afterward he accepts the route toward the mountain pass, scavenges weapons and supplies, and follows Scholar's proposed climb when rockfall destroys the road. (Chapters 5–9)
Shifty's health deteriorates faster than the others because he drinks heavily from the water Sunny secretly poisoned with Bloodbane. Feverish and weak, he argues that Sunny is cursed, proposes discarding him as dead weight, and covets his boots. Scholar delays that violence because Sunny may be useful later. Soon afterward Shifty loses his footing on the frozen slope and tumbles across the rocks until his body is broken, leaving the other three to continue without him. (Chapters 9–11 and 13)
Appearance and personality
Shifty is an adult man with a roguish manner; the narration emphasizes his glistening, suspicious eyes and worsening physical state more than stable facial details. Poison leaves him feverish, unfocused, short of breath, and barely able to speak before the fall. Like the other slaves, he scavenges fur, weapons, and provisions from the destroyed caravan to survive the mountain cold. (Chapters 3 and 9–10)
Fear expresses itself in hostility for Shifty. He curses freely, looks for weaker targets, threatens Sunny, and quickly proposes killing or abandoning him when supplies and strength grow scarce. He is nevertheless capable of immediate cooperation when survival requires it, helping restrain a larva and push the wagon. His selfishness is real, but Sunny has already poisoned him before Shifty's later betrayal becomes explicit. (Chapters 4–10 and 13)
Abilities and Aspect
Shifty is a mundane human with no stated Aspect, awakened soul core, sorcery, or supernatural Ability. He possesses enough ordinary strength to pull chains and help move the wagon, but performs worse than frail Sunny once Bloodbane takes effect. His rapid collapse is caused by poison rather than evidence of unusually poor natural endurance. (Chapters 4–10 and 13)
His useful skills are those of a desperate survivor: scavenging, carrying equipment, and joining simple physical plans. He neither identifies the Mountain King's blindness nor recognizes the poisoned water. The local corpus supplies no former occupation, combat training, true name, or evidence that “Shifty” was a name used by anyone other than Sunny's narration. (Chapters 3–11)
Relationships
Sunny
Sunny frees Shifty and repeatedly uses his labor in cooperative escape plans, while privately expecting him to become dangerous. Shifty validates that suspicion by proposing Sunny's death for his boots and to remove “dead weight.” Neither knows the full extent of the other's hostility: Shifty never learns that Sunny had poisoned the water immediately after the first attack, before the group's betrayals unfolded. (Chapters 5–10 and 13)
Scholar and Hero
Scholar advises Shifty, restrains his rashest impulse, and calls him a friend after his death, though Sunny regards the performance as insincere. Hero coordinates the survivors, redistributes Shifty's burdens when he becomes ill, and observes his death with emotion held beneath a controlled voice. Their cooperation lasts only as long as the mountain allows; no earlier bond among the three is established. (Chapters 3–11)
Items
Shifty owns no named Memory or uniquely identified item. He scavenges a weapon, fur, water, and other provisions from dead members of the caravan, but the group redistributes most of his load when he weakens and recovers what remains after his fall. No item is stated to survive the First Nightmare as a Memory or lasting possession. (Chapters 5–11)
